Assam chief minister rejects separate Bodoland demand

Agencies Guwahati, Jan 31 – Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi Sunday rejected the demand for a separate Bodoland state and instead advocated the need for a greater Assamese society where people of all communities live together. ‘I would say we should live together instead of trying to further fragment the state. Other genuine grievances and demands of the Bodo people could be resolved through discussions,’ the chief minister told journalists.

Agra meet to discuss robot use in urology treatment

Agencies Agra, Jan 31 – Use of robots and computers for surgery on patients with urological problems will be discussed at an international conference on advances in urology, to be held in the city of the Taj Mahal beginning Feb 3. The five-day conference will be attended by over 1,000 Indian and 200 foreign specialists in urology. In the pre-congress workshop, specialists of the American Urological Association will highlight and demonstrate latest robotic assisted laproscopic techniques.

Forty cars in third Indo-Bhutan Friendship Rally

Kolkata, Jan 31 – Altogether 40 cars, 25 from India and 15 from Bhutan, will compete in the third Indo-Bhutan Friendship Car Rally 2010-Eastern Himalayan Challenge which begins from Siliguri in northern West Bengal Feb 4. The three-day rally, kickstarting from the Himalayan Tennis Academy in Siliguri, will go through challenging routes in India and Bhutan and finally culminate at Gelephu Stadium in the Bhutanese capital Thimpu Feb 6. the rally was formally flagged off here Sunday by former army chief Gen (retd) Shanker Roychowdhury.

Need to develop reading habit in children: NGO

New Delhi, Jan 31 – In the age of internet when information is just a click away, an NGO Sunday emphasised on developing reading habits among children by making books available to them. To promote reading culture, the Association of Writers and Illustrators for Children (AWIC) is conducting an International Conference on ‘Children’s Libraries – Building a Book Culture’ from Feb 4 to 6 in the capital. ‘We need to have more libraries for children so that books are easily available to them across the country, including those from poor background,’ said an AWIC official.

DPA Melbourne, Jan 31 – Roger Federer lived up to expectations as he schooled Andy Murray 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (13-11) to win the Australian Open for a fourth time here Sunday. The world number one claimed his record 16th career Grand Slam singles title from his 22nd major final. Federer, 28, rallied from 2-5 down in the third set and saved five set points in the dramatic tiebreak, clinching victory on his third match point in two hours and 41 minutes.

DPA Melbourne, Jan 31 – Top seed Roger Federer defeated Andy Murray 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (11) Sunday to win the Australian Open for the fourth time. Federer, 28, rallied from 2-5 down in the third set and saved five set points in the dramatic tiebreak, clinching victory on his third match point. It was the 16th career Grand Slam title for the world number one from Switzerland.

Haryana village asks couple to end marriage, live as siblings

Agencies Rohtak (Haryana), Jan 31 – A village ‘panchayat’ (council) near this Haryana town has directed a married couple to start staying as brother and sister as they are from the same ‘gotra’ (sub-caste). Satish Berwal of Kheri village in this district was married to Kavita, a resident of Bhagi village in Jhajjar district, three years ago. The couple also have a 10-month-old boy.

Indian taxi driver fatally stabbed in New Zealand

Agencies Wellington, Jan 31 – An Indian taxi driver was fatally stabbed early Sunday in New Zealand, a media report said. Thirtynine-year-old Hiren Mohini was driving the taxi which went off the road and collided with a tree at about 1.30 a.m. An emergency device in the taxi was triggered on impact and other taxi drivers reached the scene within minutes.

‘China bugging, burgling, honey-trapping British businessmen’

Agencies London, Jan 31 – The Chinese government is not only hacking into computers but also bugging, burgling and blackmailing British business executives in search of commercial secrets, the British intelligence agency was quoted saying Sunday. The Sunday Times quoted a secret MI5 document as saying spies from the Chinese army and public security ministry approach British businessmen with offers of gifts, including cameras and memory sticks that have been found to contain electronic bugs which provide the Chinese remote access to users’ computers. The MI5 describes the Chinese government as constituting ‘one of the most significant espionage threats to the UK’.
