Indian taxi driver stabbed to death in New Zealand

Agencies Wellington, Jan 31 – An Indian taxi driver was stabbed to death early Sunday in New Zealand, a media report said. Hiren Mohini was driving a taxi that went off the road and hit a tree. The incident took place at about 1.30 a.m.

Jaya Prada backs Amar Singh in Samajwadi row

Agencies New Delhi, Jan 31 – Samajwadi Party Lok Sabha member Jaya Prada Sunday batted hard for former party strongman Amar Singh and lashed out at his detractors, saying they will be responsible if ‘anything happened to him’. ‘If anything happens to him (Amar Singh), those who have targeted him in the party will be responsible,’ Jaya Prada told mediapersons here, coming out publicly in support of a friend whom the Samajwadi Party has now come to view as a liability. Jaya Prada, Lok Sabha member from Rampur and a close associate of Amar Singh, however, hastened to say she was not quitting the Samajwadi Party.

Pakistan Taliban chief buried: Report

Agencies Islamabad, Jan 31 – Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud was buried after being killed in a US drone attack, state-run tv channel reported Sunday, though the army has no confirmation of his death. Mehsud was injured in a US drone attack in Shaktoi area in the South Waziristan tribal region near Afghanistan border on Jan 14 and succumbed to his injuries three days later, according to PTV. The tv channel also reported that he had been buried in a graveyard in Mamondzai area of Orakzai region.

Ranjit Kumar takes over as ITBP chief

Agencies New Delhi, Jan 31 – National Disaster Response Force chief Ranjit Bhatia Sunday took over as the director general of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). A 1974-batch Indian Police Service officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, Bhatia took over from Vikram Srivastava, who will now head the country’s largest paramilitary force, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Bhatia has served in Uttar Pradesh police, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Cabinet Secretariat and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

Washington, January 31 : A new modeling study has determined that painting your roofs white can help reduce the effects of global warming in the city. ccording to a report in Live Science, the study simulated the effects of painting roofs white to reflect incoming solar rays and found that it could help cool cities and reduce the effects of global warming. “Our research demonstrates that white roofs, at least in theory, can be an effective method for reducing urban heat,” said Keith Oleson, the lead author of the study and a researcher at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado.
