Brit binge drinker, 22, a drink away from death

London, January 31 : A British binge drinker, who used to guzzle down seven litres of cider and three bottles of wine a day, has confessed she is just a drink away from landing in the grave. Jess Deelay, from Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England, who turned alcoholic at 15 and has fallen into coma twice, now suffers from half-damaged pancreas and abcesses on her liver due to her drinking spree. “My hair has fallen out in clumps and I’m on morphine because I’m in so much pain.

First marathon run in Chandigarh kicks off

British High Commission suspends visa application from parts of northern India

New Delhi, Jan 31 : The British High Commission announced a temporary suspension in accepting visa applications from parts of north India due to an unprecedented spurt in student-visa seekers from the region. The decision to freeze the issue of fresh visas was taken after a dramatic rise in the number of applications between October and December last year. The UK Border Agency, which enforces Britain’s immigration and customs regulations, has instructed its visa-application centres in New Delhi, Chandigarh and Jalandhar to stop accepting applications for student visas from Monday (February 1).

Just one energy drink can cause "serious heart conditions"

Melbourne, Jan 31 : Just one energy drink, designed to increase stamina and improve physical performance, can cause ‘serious heart conditions,’ according to a new study. According to Adelaide Now, the study has prompted Australian Medical Association state president Dr Andrew Lavender to warn people to limit their consumption of energy drinks to one a day until further urgent research into long-term consumption of the drinks is complete. The study by the University of Adelaide, Royal Adelaide Hospital and Cardiovascular Research Centre, found ‘common energy drinks do trigger significant changes, including a rise in blood pressure, increased stickiness of blood and decreased blood vessel function’.

Indian-born artist sculpts his way to Britain rich list

Agencies London, Jan 31 – Indian-born sculptor Anish Kapoor, famous for his massive installations around the world, has joined the ranks of Britain’s super-rich artists and is now considering buying a five million pound country mansion, a newspaper reported Sunday. Kapoor will be included in The Sunday Times Rich List when the 2010 edition comes out, joining artists Damien Hirst and Lucian Freud. Hirst is worth about 235 million pounds and Freud 120 million pounds.
