Good response for first Chandigarh marathon

Chandigarh, Jan 31 – The first Chandigarh marathon Sunday got enthusiastic response from people, including a 77-year-old record holder and an industrialist who donated Rs.5,000 for every kilometre he ran. Masresha from Ethiopia was the first to complete the full marathon in 2 hours 10 minutes and 51 seconds. The winning time at the Mumbai marathon Jan 17 was 2 hours 12 minutes and 34 seconds.

PM undergoes routine health checkup at AIIMS

Agencies New Delhi, Jan 31 – Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Sunday underwent a routine medical checkup Sunday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here, almost an year after his coronary bypass surgery. Doctors said his tests were normal. The prime minister went to AIIMS for routine medical evaluation, said an official of the Prime Minister’s Office.

Excess liquidity to remain a concern: SBI chief

Baharampur (West Bengal), Jan 31 – The country’s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) sees excess liquidity to be a concern for the bank over the next two quarters, a top official said here Sunday. ‘Every month we receive Rs.12,000 crore of deposits, of which Rs.7,000 crore comes as fixed deposit and Rs.5,000 crore as savings and our monthly credit growth is not upto that level,’ SBI chairman O.P. Bhatt said at a press conference at Baharampur in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district.

Gadkari denies comparing Narendra Modi with Mahatma Gandhi

Agencies Bangalore, Jan 31 – Bharatiya Janata Party president Nitin Gadkari Sunday denied he had compared Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi with Mahatma Gandhi. ‘I was only referring to Gujarat government’s programmes for the poor and said that Modi was following in the footsteps of Gandhiji who had initiated Antyodaya (welfare of the poor) programme,’ Gadkari told reporters here. ‘Modi is inspired by Gandhiji and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (one of the founders of BJP’s precursor Jan Sangh) and is doing what Gandhiji did,’ the BJP chief said.

Goa MP calls Russian envoy’s action ‘rough’

Panaji, Jan 31 – Goa Rajya Sabha MP Shantaram Naik, who has in the past been hauled up for his callous comments on rape, Sunday said Russian Ambassador Alexander Kadakin’s reaction was ‘rough’ when he threatened to issue advisory against the state following a nine-year-old Russian girl’s rape in Goa Jan 26. The Congress MP was speaking to a local television news channel HCN. ‘For a country (Russia) where there is nearly no rule of law, he (Kadakin) cannot comment on administration here,’ Naik said, when asked for his comments on the adverse publicity received by Goa following the girl’s rape.

BSF chief’s 5-month-younger brother is CRPF head

Agencies New Delhi, Jan 31 – The new chief of the Central Reserve Police Force Vikram Srivastava, while taking over the reins of the country’s biggest paramilitary force Sunday, sought to dismiss the controversy over his intriguing five-month age difference with that of his elder brother and BSF chief Raman Srivastava. ‘The matter was duly examined by the competent authority (before his appointment as CRPF director general),’ said a smiling Srivastava in response to a query. According to home ministry records, elder brother Raman was born Oct 24, 1951, while Vikram was born exactly four months and 24 days later, March 18, 1952 — a biological impossibility.

Akmal brothers face disciplinary action for pre-Hobart Test controversy

Sydney, Jan 31: Pakistan vice-captain Kamran Akmal and his brother Umar will face disciplinary action for allegedly violating their central contracts during the controversy that prevailed before the Hobart Test against Australia. The PCB is unimpressed over Kamran repeatedly insisting that he was playing in Hobart Test despite the team hierarchy flying in reserve wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmad to replace him. Similarly, Umar is in the firing line for declaring himself unfit for the Test and announced he would not play, which some Pakistani players believe he faked in protest over his brother’s sacking.
