Pak, Brit agencies divided over missing passports

Islamabad, Jan.31 : The Pakistani and British agencies are a divided lot over the investigations concerning the 100 Pakistani passports which were purportedly lost by the ritish High Commission in Islamabad. However, a spokesman of the High Commission denied any such differences and said that they are working closely with the FIA and investigations into the case are still underway. Sources privy to the issue said that a four-member Federal Investigations Agency (FIA) team had been investigating the matter along with United Kingdom Border Agency (UKBA), but they have ended the probe after differences between the two agencies.

Lanka labourers earning basic wages while producing for UK fashion retailers

Colombo, Jan.31 : Factory workers in Sri Lanka are struggling to survive on basic wages as low as 25 pence an hour to produce clothes for leading British retailers, who say they abide by an ethical trading initiative intended to protect employees’ rights. Thousands of women work six days a week to take home a basic wage of less than 50 pounds a month, reports The Sunday Times. Some factory owners and retailers admit that the basic wages are insufficient to live on, but add they are dictated by fierce international competition.

IPCC ignored leading scientists’ warning on false Himalayan glaciers report

London, Jan. 31 : The United Nations’ climate watchdog was warned by leading scientists not to publish its bogus claims that the Himalayan glaciers would melt by 2035, but it ignored them. Austrian glaciologist Georg Kaser, who was a lead author on another section of the report, had warned the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2006- a year before the Nobel-prize winning report was published.

Zardari enjoys amnesty only in criminal cases: Ahsan

Karachi, Jan.31 : Senior Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Aitzaz Ahsan has said President Asif Ali Zardari enjoys amnesty only in criminal cases and not in civil matters. Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a programme here, Ahsan said the final authority to interpret any article of the constitution rests only with the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Earlier, the Pakistan’s National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had said there is no threat to Zardari in view of the Supreme Court’s verdict declaring the controversial amnesty law as ‘Unconstitutional’.
