Three security men killed in Colombia ambush

Bogota, Jan 31 – Four police officers and three soldiers were killed in northeastern Colombia when their patrol came under attack by unknown assailants, police said. The attack in which grenades and gunfire was used took place Saturday in the province of Aruaca, near the border with Venezuela, regional police chief Marlon Granados said. He blamed the attack on the Marxist rebels from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, known as the FARC.

Internet web-cam saves man trapped in German sea ice

Agencies St Peter Ording (Germany), Jan 31 – A man who became lost while walking on sea ice off the German coast has been rescued after an alert internet user hundreds of miles away noticed him on live web-cam images of a beach, police confirmed Sunday. The man clambered into a 300-metre-wide belt of pack ice off St Peter Ording beach on the North Sea coast of Germany to take photographs of a sunset. After dusk, he could not remember in which direction land and sea were located.

Agencies New Delhi, Jan 31 – Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam performed in a live concert here Sunday to raise funds for a campaign against child labour in the country. The concert titled Pukaar saw the audience, consisting mainly of youngsters, going crazy with excitement and cheering while standing on chairs, while Nigam churned out his chartbuster songs including ‘Shukran Allah’ (‘Kurbaan’), ‘Aal Izz Well’ (’3 Idiots’), ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ (‘Kal Ho Na Ho’) and ‘Soniye’ (‘Mujhse Shaadi Karogi’) among many others. ‘This is a very noble cause and we need to continue this campaign till each and every child labourer in this country is given back their normal childhood,’ said Nigam.

10 Americans arrested in Haiti for child trafficking

Port-au-Prince, Jan 31 – Ten US citizens were arrested in Haiti on the charges of trafficking 33 children from the earthquake-hit nation, Press TV reported Sunday. The Americans were detained at Malpasse, Haiti’s main border crossing with the Dominican Republic, after Haitian police found 33 children – aged between two months and 12 years – from their vehicle. One of the detainees, who identified himself as a member of Idaho-based charity New Life Children’s Refuge, denied they had done anything wrong.

NASA’s new mission to unlock secret of solar storms

Agencies London, Jan 31 – NASA is sending a new mission in the space to observe the surface of the sun so as to unlock the secret of solar storms and other chaotic activities. The Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), scheduled to be launched Feb 9, will spend five years in the space to observe how sunlight is generated. It will try to trace causes of extreme solar activities, such as sun spots, solar winds and flares.

Russian NSA in India Monday, to discuss Taliban, terror

Agencies New Delhi, Jan 31 – With the London conference clearing the way for reconciliation with the Taliban, national security advisers (NSA) of India and Russia will meet Monday to share views on the new strategy of integrating the hardline militia in Afghanistan that is a cause of concern to both countries. National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon will hold talks with his Russian counterpart Nikolay Patrushev, secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation – the first foreign NSA to visit New Delhi since Menon assumed charge a week ago. ‘Negotiations are expected to focus on topical issues of regional and international security, development of multifaceted Russian-Indian cooperation in bilateral and multilateral formats,’ the Russian embassy said here Sunday while announcing Patrushev’s visit.

Dalit student commits suicide, teachers booked

Agencies Lucknow, Jan 31 – Repeated failures at the examinations led a final year medical student at the King George’s Medical University here in Uttar Pradesh to allegedly end his life by consuming poison here. The body of Sushil Kumar Chaudhary, 26, was found in his rented home in the Kanpur Road Lucknow Development Authority colony Sunday. In the suicide note, the youth blamed some of his teachers for driving him to take the extreme step.
