Power is not the mission of BJP, says Advani

Agencies Bhopal, Jan 31 – Insisting that attaining power is not the mission of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), senior party leader L K Advani Sunday called upon BJP workers to root out corruption and work for the welfare of the people. Addressing a convention of newly-elected office bearers of civic bodies in Madhya Pradesh here, the former Deputy Prime Minister said that power is not the mission of the BJP, which has always stood for the welfare of the people. Advani said that he was happy to see that the BJP governments in states were working for the uplift of the poor.

India to protect fishermen from Lankan naval attacks

Agencies Chennai, Jan 31 – India will take necessary steps to protect fishermen from the attacks of Sri Lankan Navy and will ask the island government to look at a political resolution of the problems of Tamils living there, said new National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon. Speaking to reporters here Sunday after meeting Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at the state secretariat, Menon said the Indian government is in continuous dialogue with the Sri Lankan government for early resettlement and rehabilitation of the Tamils.

Resist efforts to create lawlessness in West Bengal: CPI-M

Agencies Kolkata, Jan 31 – With political clashes in West Bengal on the rise, the state’s ruling Left Front major Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Sunday called for resisting efforts to foment lawlessness by organising the masses. ‘We have to rally the masses and organise protests and resistance patiently without getting provoked against efforts to create lawlessness and terror,’ CPI-M state secretary Biman Bose told media persons after a two-day extended session of the state unit. Bose said party general secretary Prakash Karat noted during the session that Leftists have been the victim of vicious attacks across the country since the Lok Sabha polls last year.

RSS concern for Hindi-speakers not sincere, says Congress

Agencies New Delhi, Jan 31 – The Congress Sunday accused the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of ‘double-speak’ on preventing spread of linguistic chauvinism in Maharashtra. Congress spokesman Shakeel Ahmed said that if the RSS was genuinely concerned in protecting the Hindi-speaking people in Maharashtra, it should ask the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to snap ties with the Shiv Sena. ‘The BJP is a political wing of the RSS,’ Ahmed said, adding that the RSS should ask the party to snap its ties with the Shiv Sena.’Otherwise (it will be understood that) the RSS is simply indulging in double-speak.’ RSS leader Ram Madhav had said the Sangh Parivar was opposed to discrimination on the basis of language and had asked its volunteers in Maharashtra to try and prevent spread of anti-Hindi feelings in the state.

Agencies New Delhi, Jan 31 – India will offer its expertise in Yoga and generic drugs to Sweden during the Indo-Sweden health week that begins Feb 1, health authorities said Sunday. ‘India would like to offer its expertise in traditional medicines like yoga and ayurveda as well as good quality and cheap generic drugs. Sweden is likely to offer its expertise in the field of diagnostics and medical education,’ a union health ministry official said.

Husband and wife of same clan declared siblings in Haryana village

Rohtak (Haryana), Jan.31 : In a bizzre incident, a village council in Rohtak city of Haryana has nullified the marriage of a couple, who belonged to the same clan and declared the husband and wife to be brother and sister. The incident occurred in Rohtak’s Kheri village where Satish Berwal and Kavita Bainival, married each other three years ago. Today, they have a 10-month-old boy from this marriage.

BJP demands stern action from Prime Minister on border issue with China

Bangalore, Jan.31 : Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday demanded Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take stern action over off and on border problems being created by China. In the recent past, there have been reports about Chinese army’s intrusions. BJP chief Nitin Gadkari said, “We are expecting stern action from the Prime Minister as far as our border issue related with China is concerned.” Speaking on the recent statement of Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat’ statement asking the RSS activists to protect north Indian immigrants from attacks in Maharashtra state, Gadkari said he would be able to comment only after verifying Bhagwat’s statement.
