Games organisers, sports ministry vie for credits

Agencies New Delhi, Jan 31 – The sports ministry and the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (CGOC) do not seem to be on the same wavelength, with both on ego trips of their own when it comes to opening of venues for the 2010 Games. In the last one week the Maj. Dhyan Chand National Stadium, the wrestling arena and the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range were ready to be inaugurated and union Sports Minister M.S.Gill and CGOC chiarman and IOA chief Suresh Kalmadi seem to be carrying on with their shadowboxing with Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit trying to keep herself out of it.

Afridi banned for two T20 matches: reports

Karachi, Jan 31 – International Cricket Council (ICC) Sunday banned Pakistan’s skipper Shahid Afridi for two Twenty20 matches, Geo TV reported. Afridi, who was leading the side in the final One-day International (ODI) against Australia in the absence of an injured Mohammad Yousuf, was caught by TV cameras appearing to chew on one side of the white ball, shortly before the umpires changed it at the end of the 45th over. Afridi admitted the charge, after which the match referee slapped the ban, the Karachi- based television channel reported.

Youth dies in Srinagar violence

Srinagar, Jan 31 – A youth was killed Sunday evening as protesters shouting anti-India slogans clashed with security forces in this Jammu and Kashmir capital, police said. A senior police officer said the youth was hit by a tear smoke shell fired by police to disperse stone-pelting mobs near Rajouri Kadal in old city. Mobs took to the streets in Gojiwara, Rajouri Kadal and Kawdara localities Sunday afternoon and clashed with police and the Central Reserve Police Force troopers.

Shiv Sena demonstrates outside SRK’s house over IPL comments

Mumbai, Jan 31 – Shiv Sena activists demonstrated in front of superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s house in Bandra here Sunday to protest his comments favouring inclusion of Pakistani players in the Indian Premier League (IPL). They dubbed him a traitor and have demanded that he apologise. The Sena activists gathered outside Shah Rukh’s home, Mannat, and protested late in the afternoon.

Agencies New Delhi, Jan 31 – Over 6,500 students, who could not take the computer-based Common Admission Test (CAT) due to technical glitches last year, re-appeared in the exam Sunday. ‘The phase two was smooth and ended successfully,’ S. Roy, head of Prometric India that conducted the first ever online version of CAT, told IANS.

Bindra equals his Beijing score at Munich

New Delhi, Jan 31 – India’s Abhinav Bindra matched his Olympics score at the International Shooting Competition at Munich here Sunday. Bindra shot a series of 99, 99, 100, 99, 100 and 99 to equal his qualification score of 596 out of 600, which he had shot at Bejing to win the Olympic gold, indian shooting.com reported. Bindra had also scored 596 at the RIAC Cup at Luxembourg in December.

Government taking steps to check food prices: Pranab
