Now, a management university conducts online tests

Agencies New Delhi, Jan 31 – After the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), over 5,500 candidates successfully took the first ever computer-based test for admission to the management programmes of Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) Sunday, on the second day of the test. The NMAT, as the deemed university calls its test, is being conducted at 51 centres in 19 cities by Pearson VUE. ‘The feedback on the NMAT online testing experience from candidates has been very positive.

Aero sports centre launched in Haryana

Agencies Chandigarh, Jan 31 – The country’s first aero sports centre was Sunday launched at Bachhaud air strip near Narnaul town in Haryana. Named after former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, himself a trained commercial pilot, the centre has been set up by the state government in collaboration with the Aero Club of India. It is the country’s first National Aero Sports Centre.

Super Williams now turns her focus to gridiron

DPA Melbourne, Jan 31 – Serena Williams is heading off to the American football Super Bowl next weekend in Miami buoyed by her fifth title at the Australian Open. The American finally won in Melbourne during an even-numbered year (previous titles came in 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009), with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Justine Henin, who was playing her second match since reversing a retirement which lasted 20 months. Williams, now a 12-time Grand Slam winner – and a minority owner along with sister Venus in the Miami Dolphins – can’t help boasting about another of the multitude of perks in her charmed life.

PM to inaugurate chief secretaries’ conference

New Delhi, Jan 31 – Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will inaugurate a two-day conference of state chief secretaries here Monday aimed at formalising the process of interaction with states and union territories. The first of a kind conference would serve as a standing forum for exchange of views between the central and the state government and provide an occasion for interaction on internal matters, a government statement said. ‘Issues relating to the latest trends in technology, emerging global challenges and opportunities and key security concerns and the role of state governments would be discussed.

Gill asks shooters to be patient

Agencies New Delhi, Jan 31 – Sports Minister M.S.Gill Sunday was at pains to explain why no coach was appointed for the pistol shooters, with only eight months left for the Commonwealth Games, that forced them to hire a trainer and pay him from their own pocket. Gill instead trained his gun at the shooters, saying they should have showed ‘patience and not rush’ to appoint a coach for themselves. The minister, who opened the Karni Singh Shooting Range Sunday and emphasised on his role in getting the venue ready on time, tersely told reporters that authorities are not to be blamed as they are trying to get the best foreign coaches.

January witnessed sharp rise in infiltration bids

Agencies Jammu, Jan 31 – The first month of this year has registered a sharp increase in infiltration bids from Pakistan across the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir. ‘There have been 25 infiltration attempts along the LoC and IB this month only. And we cannot say as yet how many militants were able to sneak in,’ official sources on condition of anonymity told IANS.

Hewitt targets return at Wimbledon

DPA Melbourne, Jan 31 – Lleyton Hewitt refused to entertain the thought that his career might be cut short after his second hip operation in less than a year and a half. The 22nd-ranked Hewitt, who turns 29 in just over three weeks, is already counting down to a late May return in time for the French Open. But his most realistic chances for success might lie at Wimbledon where he reached the quarter-finals last year and claimed the title in 2002.
