CBSE board students cope with last minute jitters

New Delhi, Feb 28 – With the board examinations beginning next week, Class 10 and 12 students are a tense lot, busy with last-minute preparations. And the Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) helpline is ringing non-stop, say counsellors attending to anxious parents and children. ‘I am not nervous.

Man eats dog’s heart to ‘prevent rabies’ after bite’

Ranchi, Feb 28 – A labourer in Jharkhand, who was bitten by a street dog, killed the animal, cut out its heart and ate it to protect himself from rabies. After the dog bit him Saturday, Chukna Ganju, 30, a resident of Dakra village, on the outskirts of Ranchi, caught hold of the animal and killed it by flinging it on stones, local media reports said Sunday. When the dog died, he removed its heart with the help of a pair of scissors and ate it raw.

New Delhi, Feb 28 – Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani led the nation in paying floral tributes to former prime minister Morarji Desai at Parliament House on his 114th birth anniversary Sunday. Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office Prithviraj Chavan, MPs, former MPs and parliament officials also offered floral tributes at the portrait of Morarji Desai in the central hall of Parliament House, said a release issued by the Lok Sabha secretariat here.

Over three million women gather for Pongala festival

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 28 – More than three million women devotees lit earthen kilns to cook rice and jaggery as offering for the presiding deity of Attukal Bhagavathi temple here Sunday on the occasion of Pongala festival. The ritual started after the chief priest lit a hearth with fire brought from the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. The fire was then passed on to the devotees, who stood in lines, stretching up to main roads of the city.

Four Independent MPs want their grouping recognised

New Delhi, Feb 28 – Four independent MPs, led by expelled Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jaswant Singh, are hoping Speaker Meira Kumar would recognise their grouping ‘Lok Morcha’ as a single block. Apart from Darjeeling MP Jaswant Singh, the other members of the group are: former Jharkhand assembly speaker Inder Singh Namdhari, former union minister and Bihar MP Digvijay Singh and Maharashtra MP Raju Shetty. Three of the independent MPs did not join the opposition parties in their walkout in the Lok Sabha Friday against the budget proposal for a fuel price hike.

Online CAT results out

New Delhi, Feb 28 – The much-awaited results of the Common Admission Test were announced Sunday by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). The scores uploaded on the official website will be the deciding factor for admission to the IIMs and around 100 other management schools. ‘IIMs have announced the CAT 2009 scores at www.catiim.in.

Five die in Orissa accident

Bhubaneswar, Feb 28 – Five people, including four members of a family, were killed when an auto-rickshaw in which they were travelling collided with a truck in Orissa early Sunday, police said. The dead included a one-year-old child and a woman besides the auto driver. The accident took place near Pipili in Puri.

Tsunami threat: People evacuated from Russian islands

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (Russia), Feb 28 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Residents of Kuril Islands in Russia’s Far East were being evacuated due to the threat of tsunami roused by a quake in Chile, an official said. The expected height of waves to hit the regional coast is some 2 metres, spokesman for the local administration said. ‘The inland of the North Kuril Islands is not subjected to the threat,’ he said.
