Chengdu woos Indian firms to invest in China’s IT hub

Bangalore, Feb 28 – Chengdu in Sichuan province of southwest China is wooing Indian firms to set up software development centres in that country’s IT hub and major outsourcing destination. ‘Chengdu is an excellent gateway to China for Indian companies with its huge talent base, low operating cost, government support and presence of large multinational IT and outsourcing firms,’ Chengdu mayor Ge Honglin told reporters here Sunday. Ge flew in to India’s tech hub with a 50-member business delegation late Saturday by Air China’s first flight to Bangalore from Shanghai via Chengdu to promote investments in his capital city.

Section of media misread my remarks, says Tharoor

Riyadh, Feb 28 – Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor Sunday stated here that a section of media had misread his remarks about Saudi Arabia being a potential interlocutor for India in its relations with Pakistan. Tharoor issued the statement of clarification here Sunday after his remarks to the media that Saudi Arabia was a potential interlocutor for India created a mini-storm in political circles back home. ‘A section of the media has misread the remarks made by me in Riyadh last (Saturday) evening,’ Tharoor said in the statement.

‘PMO approval not taken for ad featuring ex-Pakistani air chief’

New Delhi, Feb 28 – The union ministry of women and child development did not seek the mandatory approval of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) before publishing the prime minister’s photograph in a controversial advertisement featuring a former Pakistani air force chief, the answer to a Right to Information (RTI) application has revealed. The revelation was made by the WCD ministry in a reply given to RTI activist Subhash Chandra Agrawal, who had sought information regarding the controversial advertisement released by the ministry before Republic Day last month. Agrawal had asked if the PMO’s approval is compulsory before publishing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s photograph in any advertisement of a union ministry and if the WCD ministry had sought it.

Delhi records season’s hottest day in four years

New Delhi, Feb 28 – Delhi Sunday recorded the hottest day of the season in the past four years at 31.6 degrees Celsius. The Met office has forecast a further rise in day temperature Monday. The maximum temperature settled at 31.6 degrees Celsius, six notches above the average.

CAT online results declared

New Delhi, Feb 28 – The much-awaited results of the Common Admission Test (CAT) were announced Sunday by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). The scores uploaded on the official website will be the deciding factor for admission to the IIMs and around 100 other management schools. ‘IIMs have announced the CAT 2009 scores at www.catiim.in.

Saudi worried about Pakistan, wants leaders united against terror

Riyadh, Feb 28 – Saudi Arabia is worried about the current situation in Pakistan and wants to see the political leadership in that country to be united in the fight against extremism, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al Faisal said Sunday. ‘Pakistan is a friendly country to us. Therefore, anytime one sees a dangerous trend in a friendly country, one is not only sorry but worried,’ Saudi minister said while addressing the visiting Indian media accompanying Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on his historic three-day visit to this Gulf nation that started Saturday.

Storm as Tharoor says Saudi Arabia can be interlocutor

Riyadh, Feb 28 – India sees Saudi Arabia as a ‘valuable interlocutor’ in relation to Pakistan, Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor Sunday said. After his remark sparked a storm, he clarified he was not making Riyadh a mediator on India-Pakistan issues. Not convinced, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is now in Riyadh along with the minister, to explain.

British PM on course to win next election: Survey

London, Feb 28 – Britain’s beleaguered Prime Minister Gordon Brown is heading towards winning the next general election as a new survey forecasts his Labour party holding 317 seats in the parliament against 263 of the opposition Tories. The latest poll carried out by YouGov suggested that the ruling party has narrowed the gap in popularity against the Conservatives and Brown was on course to remain prime minister after the election scheduled to be held in May. The survey places David Cameron’s Conservatives just two points ahead with 37 percent support, as against 35 percent for Labour – the closest gap between the parties in more than two years.

Coins in memory of Rajendra Prasad released

Patna, Feb 28 – Vice President Hamid Ansari Sunday released here commemorative coins of Rs.5 and Rs.100 denomination as a mark of respect to India’s first president Rajendra Prasad. Ansari released the coins at a function organised by the state government to commemorate the 125th year of birth of Rajendra Prasad and his 47th death anniversary Feb 28. Before releasing the coins, Ansari visited Rajendra Prasad’s memorial, officially known as Rajendra Smriti Sthal here to pay homage.
