Cigarettes may contain pig blood: Australian expert

Islamabad, April 1 – Cigarettes may contain traces of pig blood which, if confirmed, can lead to protests against tobacco companies that refuse to disclose the ingredients used in making the product, an Australian expert was quoted by Pakistan’s Online news agency as saying. A study conducted in the Netherlands has identified 185 different industrial uses of the pig, including the use of its haemoglobin in cigarette filters, which religious groups could find to be ‘very offensive’, Simon Chapman, professor of public health at the University of Sydney, said here Wednesday. The research offered an insight into the ‘otherwise secretive world’ of cigarette manufacture and was likely to raise concerns for devout Muslims and Jews, Chapman said.

Lenin’s statue to be restored in Russia

Moscow, April 1 (IANS/RIA Novosti) A statue of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin, which was damaged in a bomb blast last year, will be restored in St. Petersburg. The bronze statue of the communist leader was unveiled November 7, 1926 at the Finlyandsky railway station where he made a historic speech after returning from exile in 1917 to lead the October Revolution.

New Delhi, April 1 – Right to Education as a fundamental right formally came into effect Thursday with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging all stakeholders to make it a success by empowering people through education. ‘Today our government comes before you to pledge all our children elementary education. The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act enacted by parliament in August, 2009 comes into force today (Thursday),’ the prime minister said in his early morning address to the nation delivered both in Hindi and English.

Warrantless wiretapping illegal, rules US court

Washington, April 1 – Ruling that a Bush administration programme continued by President Barack Obama of domestic surveillance without a warrant is illegal, a federal judge has held the government liable for illegally wiretapping an Islamic charity. Wednesday’s ruling by District Judge Vaughn R. Walker in Northern California District Court reaffirmed an earlier decision that the warrantless wiretaps conducted on an Oregon-based Islamic non-profit organization were illegal, CNN reported.
