New Delhi, March 31 – India should leapfrog directly from second generation telecom to fourth generation networks that not only enable the entire range of mobile multimedia applications but also at speeds 10 times faster, say stakeholders. Responding to the consultations on the subject invited by the industry’s watchdog Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, several stakeholders said having delayed the launch of 3G in the country, a leapfrog to fourth generation telephony was best suited for India. ‘Even though the device ecosystem is in a nascent stage, volumes associated with India can be expected to provide a fillip to the device ecosystem, making 4G more affordable to everyone,’ said Tata Teleservices.
Shimla, March 31 – Tata Teleservices Wednesday launched its GSM services in Himachal Pradesh under the Tata Docomo brand, a company’s official said here. ‘We are offering per second tariff structure for every service,’ Rajeev Narayan, the company’s vice-president, corporate affairs, told reporters. The company has connectivity in 286 towns and 4,342 villages in the state.
Mumbai, March 31 – Expressing serious concern over the growing incidents of sea piracy, armed robbery and hostage-taking on the high seas, Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan Wednesday said that top priority must be accorded to the safety of the seafaring community. Inaugurating the Merchant Navy Week here, Sankaranarayanan called upon the international community to intervene and ‘take decisive action’ to end piracy and hijacking of shipping vessels for ransom.
New Delhi, March 31 – India Wednesday unveiled a comprehensive policy document that consolidates all policies on foreign direct investment, including as many as 178 press notes issued from time to time, in a bid to simplify procedures. Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma unveiled the document at a press conference here and said it will be updated every six months, with the help of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). ‘The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) will ensure the changes are incorporated every six months,’ Sharma said, adding the industry lobby will also help and assist foreign investors who intend to invest in India.
Bangalore, March 31 – State-run Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) earned Rs.11,415 crore in sales this fiscal (2009-10), registering a 10 percent growth over the last financial year at Rs.10,373 crore, the company said Wednesday. According to provisional figures released here, the defence behemoth posted Rs.2,617 crore in profit before tax as against Rs.2,335 crore last fiscal, a growth of 12 percent year-on-year (YoY). Though gross profit has modestly improved by 12 percent this fiscal as against 7.9 percent last fiscal, sales have declined to 10 percent from 20 percent last fiscal.
Miami, March 31 – Tomas Berdych stunned top seed Roger Federer 6-4, 6-7(3), 7-6 (6) in a dramatic struggle in the fourth round of the Miami Masters tennis. The Czech Tuesday knocked off Federer for the first time since a win at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, with Federer claiming their next eight matches, including a tight battle at the Australian Open in January. World number one Federer was unable to convert a match point in the final-set tiebreaker, obtained when a Berdych return was ruled out by electronic scoring.
