US aircraft crashes in Gulf, search on for missing crew member

Manama (Bahrain), March 31 – An early warning aircraft stationed on board the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D Eisenhower crashed into the waters of the Gulf Wednesday, according to a statement from the US Navy 5th Fleet Command. ‘An E-2C Hawkeye from Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 121 stationed aboard USS Dwight D Eisenhower (CVN 69) crashed at sea at approximately 2.00 p.m. (1100 GMT) March 31 while operating in the North Arabian Sea,’ the statement said.

‘Bullet-proof jackets can’t protect from powerful weapons’

Mumbai, March 31 – The bullet-proof jacket worn by slain ATS chief Hemant Karkare returned to haunt the Maharashtra government Wednesday when the opposition Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party slammed it for purchasing sub-standard jackets. Senior Sena leader Ramdas Kadam, who raised the issue in the Maharashtra Legislative Council Wednesday evening, alleged that the vests purchased by the government did not offer protection to the neck of the person wearing it. Hence, Karkare died in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks as he sustained bullet injuries in his neck, Kadam said.

22-year-old gangraped by auto drivers

New Delhi, March 31 – A 22-year-old woman was allegedly gangraped by three auto rickshaw drivers in Sarai Kale Khan area of southeast Delhi Tuesday night, police said Wednesday. ‘The victim, a resident of Yamuna Vihar in northeast Delhi, had taken an auto from Civil Lines to her home. There were two other people in the auto rickshaw with the driver,’ said a senior police officer.

Home Ministry sanctions 481 posts for CISF

New Delhi, Mar 31 : Union Home Ministry has sanctioned 481 posts to expand the strength of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at five public sector undertakings. Union Home Minister P Chidambaram said in the monthly report card of his ministry : ” 481 posts have been created for augmenting the strength of CISF at five PSUs and establishments.” Home Ministry sanctioned 27 posts for the Mejia Thermal Power Station, Mejia (Fire Wing), West Bengal, 53 posts for Raichur Thermal Power Station, Raichur (Fire Wing), Karnataka, and 44 posts for Kahalgaon Super Thermal Power Station, Kahalgaon (Fire wing), Bihar. The CISF would get 272 new posts for the Neyveli Lignite Corporation, Neyveli (Fire Wing), Tamil Nadu and 85 posts were sanctioned Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Visakhapatnam (Fire Wing), Andhra Pradesh.

Centre to operationalise Special Action Force

New Delhi, Mar 31 : The four Special Action Force (SAF) battalions of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), earlier raised and trained to counter anti insurgency activities, would be made operational from Wednesday. India wants access to Headley, reiterates Chidambaram

New Delhi, Mar 31 : Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday reiterated that India intends to press its request to the United States to get access to Lashkar operative David Headly aka Daood Gilani. Addressing the media, after releasing the monthly report card of the Home Ministry, Chidambaram said: “We are examining the legal implications of the agreement and, as I stated earlier, we intend to press our request for access to David Headley for questioning him and for recording his testimony.” On March 18, Headley and the US Attorney agreed on a plea bargain. Chidambaram said India is examining the plea agreement in the light of India-US Extradition Treaty.
