India’s exports rise 34.8 percent in February

New Delhi, March 31 – India’s merchandise exports grew 34.8 percent to $16.09 billion (Rs.72,400 crore) for the fourth consecutive month in February following revival of economies in developed countries. The rise for the fourth straight month in February comes after 13 successive months of decline since October 2008 on account of the global meltdown. However, exports during the April-February period declined by 11 percent to Rs.6,88,500 crore ($153 billion) from Rs.7,74,000 crore ($172 billion) in the same period last fiscal, commerce and industry minister Anand Sharma said Wednesday, unveiling of a comprehensive policy document on foreign direct investment.

Indian rape laws to be reviewed

New Delhi, Mar 31 : Central Government has constituted a high-powered committee (HPC) under the chairmanship of Union Home Secretary to review existing laws to prevent rapes in the country. The committee would examine the issues relating to review of rape laws. The suggestions made by the high powered committee have been formulated into The Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2010.

Home Ministry seizes bank accounts of ultras

New Delhi, Mar 31 : Union Home Ministry has frozen bank accounts of individuals involved in terrorist and insurgency activities. Addressing media, after releasing monthly report card, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram said the accounts were frozen under Section 51 A of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). Home Ministry, froze fourteen bank accounts of Moshin Ismail Chowdhary the Indian Mujahideen member of the Pune module and also a key suspect in the blast at German Bakery in February.

Daredevils pacer Nannes out for a week with injury

New Delhi, March 31 – Delhi Daredevils fast bowler Dirk Nannes missed Wednesday’s game against Rajasthan Royals with a finger injury and has been ruled out for a week from the Indian Premier League (IPL). The left-arm pacer sustained the injury after being hit by a scorching drive from Wriddhiman Saha in Daredevils’ last game against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Feroze Shah Kotla Monday. Nannes received stitches on the fingers and had to leave the field immediately without completing his over.

China agrees to let in more Mansarovar pilgrims

New Delhi, March 31 – China has agreed to accommodate more Indian pilgrims for the four-month-long Kailash Mansarovar ‘yatra’ (travel), External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna said Wednesday. Krishna presided over the draw of lots for selecting the people for the pilgrimage that is scheduled to begin June 1.

Government to try for consensus over nuclear bill

New Delhi, March 31 – Ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to the US April 12, the government will make another effort to muster political consensus over the contentious civil nuclear liability legislation before the second phase of the budget session. With the political impasse over the bill still persisting, the government has indicated that it is amenable to suggestions on changing the language of the draft to accommodate the concerns of the opposition which is fiercely against the legislation. The bill caps the liability of the operator of the nuclear plant, which is currently in the hands of the public sector in India, at Rs.500 crore.

Awareness on domestic violence act is low, say NGOs

New Delhi, March 31 – Despite the domestic violence act being in place for the past three years, its effectiveness has been limited as awareness about the legislation is low, civil society organisations said at a seminar here Wednesday. One of the main reasons for this was media’s ignorance over the intricacies of the act, said speakers at the national consultation on the domestic violence act. ‘It has been noted that one of the most important stakeholders, the media, is not fully aware of the intricacies of the domestic violence act.

Maoists need to be dealt with firmly: Chidambaram

New Delhi, March 31 – Saying that Maoists needed to be dealt with ‘firmly and boldly’, union Home Minister P. Chidambaram cautioned sympathisers of the left wing extremists against having any ‘illusions about their motives and methods’. Referring to the widespread violence perpetrated by the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in six states during the two-day shutdown March 22-23, Chidambaram said, ‘There were 34 incidents in which six civilians and four security personnel were killed.
