New Delhi, April 30 – Laying all controversy to rest, the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee has clarified that beef will not be served during the Games scheduled to take place in the national capital later this year. The organising committee replied an emphatic ‘no’ to a query by Right to Information (RTI) activist Subhash Chandra Agrawal, who wanted to know if beef was a compulsory item to be served during the Games, scheduled Oct 3-14. ‘Commonwealth Games Federation’s requirement from the organising committee is to provide to a quality 24 hour catering service offering nutritious meals and snacks to the athletes and their team officials during Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010 taking into consideration, cultural and dietary requirements and the need for variety and rotation of menus.

Paris, April 30 – The harshest penalties in the French draft bill to ban the Islamic all-body veil, or burqa, is to be imposed on men who force women to wear the garment, the daily Le Figaro reported Friday. According to the draft of the law examined by the daily, anyone found guilty of forcing a woman to wear the burqa through ‘violence, threats, abuse of power or authority’ faces a maximum sentence of one year in prison and a fine of up to 15,000 euros ($20,000). The law itself does not specifically target the burqa, but declares, ‘In any public area, no one may wear a garment intended to conceal his face’.

Lucknow, April 30 – Two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were among four people arrested in Uttar Pradesh on suspicion of selling arms and ammunition to Maoists, a police official said Friday. Besides the two CRPF personnel, a retired sub-inspector of the state police and a constable armourer of a police academy in Moradabad were held by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force, Additional Director General (Law and Order) Brij Lal told reporters here. ‘Yashodanandan Singh, a retired sub-inspector, Vinod Paswan and Vinesh Singh – two ‘havildars’ (head constables) armourers at the CRPF group centre in Rampur – were arrested Thursday.

New Delhi, April 30 – The National Commission for Women (NCW) is awaiting the government’s approval to initiate a Rs.40 crore scheme for relief and rehabilitation of rape victims as directed by the Supreme Court, parliament was told Friday. Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath told the Lok Sabha in a written reply that the Supreme Court had directed the women’s panel ‘to evolve a scheme for relief and rehabilitation of rape victims’ in an order dated Oct 19, 1994. ‘A scheme proposed by the NCW has been formulated.

New Delhi, April 30 – The Supreme Court Friday got three new judges, including a woman, with President Pratibha Patil elevating the chief justices of the Madras, Jharkhand and Bombay high courts. The three are Jharkhand High Court Chief Justice Gyan Sudha Misra, Madras High Court Chief Justice Hemant Laxman Gokhale and Bombay High Court Chief Justice Anil Ramesh Dave. They will be the judges of the Supreme Court with effect from the dates they assume charge of their offices, said a release issued by the ministry of law and justice here.

Guwahati, April 30 – Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi Friday downplayed threats to his life by the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) saying it was ‘nothing new’ and he again ruled out talks with the outfit on its demand of sovereignty.
