Civilian dies as separatists protest in Srinagar

Srinagar, April 30 – A 40-year-old man died Friday after supporters of hardline senior separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani stoned a vehicle in which he was travelling even as the protesters, shouting anti-India slogans, tried to take out a march in this Jammu and Kashmir capital, police said. Shafiq Ahmad Sheikh, a peon in the secondary school board, was killed after the public transport vehicle he was travelling in was attacked by stone pelters in the Batmaloo locality here. ‘Shafiq was hit on the head by a stone.

Sensex ends flat, midcaps gain

Mumbai, April 30 – A benchmark index for Indian equities Friday ended flat even as midcap scrips outperformed larger stocks. The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 17,503.47 points, ended at 17,527.82 points (provisional), 24.35 points or 0.14 percent higher than its previous close at 17,503.47 points. At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the broader 50-share S&P CNX Nifty was ruling at 5,271.95 points, a gain of 0.34 percent or 17.8 points from its previous close at 5,254.15 points.

Government sets up Integrated Check Posts at Wagah border to improve trade

Wagah Border (Punjab), Apr 30 : Integrated Check Posts (ICP) are being set up at Wagah border in Punjab to facilitate trade between India and Pakistan. Though trade across the border has witnessed a 100 percent growth in the last three years alone, the setting up of Integrated Check Posts would improve trade further. Syed Mahmood Akhter, Additional Commissioner of Customs at Wagah, said that the Indian exports have doubled from Rs four billion in the previous year to Rs eight billion this year.

Home Ministry apprises anti Naxal plan to MPs of worst affected districts

New Delhi, Apr 30 : Union Government on Friday apprised MPs belonging to 33 worst Naxal-affected districts about its strategy to counter increasing influence of rebels. Union Home Minister P Chidambaram chaired the meeting. Senior Home Ministry and Planning Commission officials apprised MPs about development schemes which are being implemented by the Centre in these districts and sought their cooperation in the task to deal with the Maoists.

Asian antelopes damage crops in Uttar Pradesh

Faizabad (UP), Apr 30 : Farmers face huge losses as mature crops of watermelon and sugarcane are damaged by herds of nilgai (Asian antelopes) in Purbazar village of Uttar Pradesh’s Faizabad district. “We are facing lots of problem because of nilgai. The ratio of nilgai here are in thousands and they come here and damage all our crops,” said Ram Nayen, a farmer.

Policemen deployed at Thailand hospital after Red Shirts’ forced entry

Bangkok, Apr 30: A total of 100 policemen have been deployed around King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Bangkok to prevent any further forced entry by the Red Shirt protesters, police chief said. Assistant national police chief Pol Lt-Gen Worapong Chiewpreecha said the Centre for the Resolution of Emergency Situations (CRES) has ordered police to provide security for all hospitals in Bangkok. The decision comes after about 200 supporters and guards of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) led by leader Payap Panket searched the hospital, claiming it was being used as a hideout by the security forces.

Study says China’s busy blogosphere no harbinger of political freedom, open speech

Buffalo (New York, US), Apr.30 : University of Buffalo communication researchers have in a study confirmed the fact that China’s cyber culture is changing and growing rapidly is no harbinger of political freedom and open speech in that country. “Discourse Behind the Forbidden Realm: Internet surveillance and its implications on China’s blogosphere” was published in the most recent volume of the journal Telematics and Informatics by noted communication researcher Junhao Hong, Professor of Communication, whose current research involves the Google/China clash. His co-author is UB doctoral student Shaojung Sharon Wang.
