Delhi University to pay compensation to radiation victims

New Delhi, April 30 – The Delhi University (DU) will pay compensation to the six people affected by the radioactive material sourced to it and found in the scrap market of Mayapuri in west Delhi and give a job to the dependents of the man who died, a varsity official said Friday. Rajendra Prasad’s family will be getting Rs.8 lakh as compensation and his widow will be given a job in the university campus, university Registrar A.K.Sinha said. ‘Five victims who were exposed to the radioactive material and hospitalised will be given the compensation amount of Rs.2 lakh each,’ he added.

One held for Ajmer Dargah blast, more arrests likely: ATS

Jaipur, April 30 – The Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of Rajasthan police has arrested a person with links to some right-wing Hindu groups in connection with the 2007 bomb blast in the Ajmer Dargah Sharif, police said Friday. The ATS said more arrests would be made soon. Three people were killed and at least 30 injured when a bomb exploded near the Ahata-e-Noor, a courtyard on the premises of the Dargah of Sufi Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti, on Oct 11, 2007.

Meghalaya militant group’s extortion bids to be probed

Shillong, April 30 – Meghalaya Home Minister H.D.R. Lyngdoh Friday said that a police probe has been ordered into the extortion demands of militant outfit, the Garo National Liberation Army, (GNLA) to politicians and businessmen. ‘We have received some information about GNLA sending SMSes to some politicians and businessmen demanding money from them,’ Lyngdoh told IANS, adding police have started their investigation.

Centre enhances pension for J-K militancy-hit old people

New Delhi, Apr 30 : Union Home Secretary G K Pillai said on Friday that the Centre has increased the amount of pension to militancy-hit old persons and handicapped in Jammu and Kashmir from Rs.500 to Rs.750 per month. The pension covers mainly widows of the victims of militancy. Recently, the Jammu and Kashmir Government has brought over 6,000 people under this scheme.

Seven die in a road mishap near Raipur

Raipur, Apr 30 : Seven people, including a woman were killed and several others suffered injuries when a private bus collided with a matador van near Saddhu village in Raipur District of Chattisgarh on Friday. The bus, which was run by a private operator, hit the van when it was on its way to Mungeli town. The mishap took place when both the vehicles had a head-on-collision killing seven occupants in both the vehicles.

Maoists kill two transport company staffers in Jharkhand

Chatra (Jharkhand) Apr 30 : Suspected Maoists killed two employees of a private transport company in Jharkhand’s Chatra District on Friday. Two employees of the Rungta Transport Company which was engaged in transporting coal in the district were shot dead by members of a Maoist backed organization, Jharkhand Janmukti Parishad. The organization reportedly killed employees, as the company has not taken permission from the Maoist outfit to carry out their activities.

BJP calls Jharkhand unit leaders to Delhi

New Delhi, April 30 – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called its party leaders from Jharkhand to Delhi Saturday for consultations on forming an alternative government in the state after the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)’s offer to support a BJP-led regime. JMM leader and Chief Minister Shibu Soren’s son Hemant Soren, who has offered to support a BJP-led government, is also expected to meet BJP leaders Saturday. Senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde said the party had decided to keep on ‘hold’ its decision to withdraw support to the Shibu Soren government.

Gujarat government employees get a bonanza

Gandhinagar, April 30 – Chief Minister Narendra Modi Friday announced a bonanza for government employees on the eve of Gujarat’s 50th foundation day. ‘Karmayogis (government employees) will get an increase in the Dearness Allowance (DA) of 8 percent from the existing 27 percent to 35 percent with effect from Jan 1, 2010,’ he announced. The increased DA will be disbursed in cash from April 1 while the difference in the DA for the period from Jan 1 to March 31 this year would be deposited in their Provident Fund Accounts.
