Armed policemen maintain tight vigil in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, April 30 – Gun-totting policemen kept a tight vigil in Hyderabad for the third consecutive day Friday in view of warnings by intelligence agencies of possible terror attacks. P olice also cracked the whip on some shopping malls for poor security measures. Police continued large-scale searches in the city amid warning of possible terror attacks.

Pan-India 3G licence price crosses Rs.9,500 crore mark

New Delhi, April 30 – India Friday concluded 104 rounds of an auction to award spectrum for third generation (3G) telecom services in the country, with the provisional winning price for a nationwide licence crossing Rs.9,500-crore mark. At the end of the 18th day of the auction, which began April 9, the provisional winning price for a pan-India licence stood at Rs.9,521.02 crore, up 172.03 percent from the Rs.3,500 crore reserve price fixed by the government. For the fifth consecutive day, Mumbai attracted the highest bid, at Rs.1,506.41 crore.

On Maharashtra Day eve, Bal Thackeray appears in public

Mumbai, April 30 – Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray made a public appearance Friday evening after a break of nearly two years at a function at Shivaji Park here to mark the golden jubilee of the formation of Maharashtra. US to give Pakistan Army two transport choppers

Islamabad, April 30 – The US said Friday it will provide two transport helicopters to assist the Pakistan military in its counter-insurgency operations. A US embassy spokesman said the two enhanced-performance Bell 412 EP utility transport helicopters, valued at $24 million, will support Pakistan’s counter-insurgency operations. The US will also provide $20 million in associated spare parts, special tools and other equipment to support the aircraft, Online news agency reported.

Centre gives approves procurement of 59,000 bullet proof jackets

New Delhi, Apr 30 : Union Home Ministry has given approval for procurement of 59,000 light weight bullet proof jackets for the Central Police Forces. Presenting April month report card, Union Home Secretary G K Pillai said here on Friday that the ministry has also given clearance to procure 378 automatic grenade launchers and related ammunition at a total cost of Rs. 37.83 crore.

Centre grants Rs. 192 crore for development in naxal affected areas

New Delhi, Apr 30 : Union Home Secretary G K Pillai said on Friday that the Centre has released Rs. 192 crore under various projects to areas disturbed by the Left Wing Extremism (LWE) during last fiscal. Presenting the April month report card of the Home Ministry, Pillai said the naxal-affected states of Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa and Bihar were granted approval for the recruitment of 6,666 special police officers (SPO).
