15 die as bus runs over marriage procession

Lucknow, June 1 – At least 15 people were killed and 11 injured when a bus ran over a marriage procession in an Uttar Pradesh village, police said Tuesday. The accident took place late Monday when the driver lost control of the state-owned bus in Gomadeh village of Azamgarh district, about 300 km from Lucknow. ‘The injured have been admitted to hospitals in Azamgarh and Varanasi districts.

Sensex slips into red in morning trade

Mumbai, June 1 – A benchmark index for Indian equities Tuesday fell during morning trade and was ruling 0.5 percent lower than its previous close. The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 16,942.82 points, was ruling at 16,849.41 points, 95.22 points or 0.56 percent down from its previous close at 16,944.63 points. At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the broader 50-share S&P CNX Nifty was ruling at 5,055.65 points, down 0.6 percent from its previous close.

Google mapped Britain’s all WiFi networks

London, June 1 – Britain’s entire wireless network has been mapped by Google’s street view car fitted with radio aerials in order to use the database for commercial purposes through its internet search engine. Every WiFi wireless router, the device that links a computer with the internet, has been entered into a Google database. The information was collected by the street view cars, which have photographed almost every home in the country.

Two Punjab cops suspended for harassing people

Zirakpur (Punjab), June 1 – Two traffic police constables have been suspended in this Punjab town on charges of harassing people and extorting money from drivers of outstation vehicles, officials said here Tuesday. Kulbir Singh and Gurvinder Singh were suspended Monday night. The traffic in-charge of this town in Mohali district, Manjit Singh, has also been transferred to police lines.

Sharp increase in drug-related deaths in Moscow

Moscow, June 1 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Moscow has seen a sharp increase in deaths related to drug overdoses in the last four years, health care officials have said. ‘The death rate from drug overdoses has risen by more than five times, while poisoning from psychotropic drugs rose 85 percent, from illicit drugs by 68 percent and from alcohol and its surrogates by 44 percent,’ a report released Monday said. Over 112,000 patients are registered in the capital’s drug clinics, including 29,614 drug addicts, according to statistics by Moscow’s Health Care Department.

Animals dying as water sources dry up in Rajasthan

Jaipur, June 1 – Rajasthan’s scorching summer is taking its toll, and not just on people wilting in the heat. With water drying up in ponds and reservoirs across Rajasthan, there are alarming reports of monkeys, chinkaras and cheetal deer dying as they stray out of their habitat into nearby villages. In the last three days at least 13 monkeys have died because of water scarcity in the last three days in Shahabad in Baran district, close to the famous Ranthambore National Park, about 230 km from here.

China forcing internet cafe shutdown for national exam

Beijing, June 1 – Many provinces in China are forcing internet cafes to shut down in order to allow students to prepare for their upcoming National College Entrance Examination. The local governments of Linxian county in Shanxi province and Linchuan district in Jiangxi province have asked internet cafes to ‘temporarily cease trading’ till June 9 and warned that fines would be levied if they refuse to comply, China Daily reported citing a statement in people.com.cn. This is the first time the regions are seeking to enforce the ban.

Macao says ban on plastic bags ‘inconvenient’

Macao, June 1 – Residents of Macao, a special administrative region of China, use on an average five plastic shopping bags every day even as 60 percent of people said it would be ‘inconvenient’ if the government prohibits its use. While 60 percent of people interviewed in Macao said having to decrease their use of plastic bags would be ‘inconvenient’, around 90 percent expressed their support to the government’s initiatives to cut the use of plastic bags. Around 60 percent of people support a tax on plastic shopping bags, and 60 percent said they would pay charges for every bag, Xinhua reported, citing a survey published in the Macao Post Daily.

Defence, counter-terrorism key focus of India-US strategic dialogue

Washington, June 1 – India and the United States begin their first strategic dialogue Wednesday with both sides keen to move beyond symbolism to concretise cooperation in areas ranging from energy, agriculture, science and technology and education to defence and counter-terrorism. Indian External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna, who would lead the inaugural ministerial level dialogue with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, would outline his vision of India-US relationship transformed by the landmark India-US civil nuclear deal in an address at the India Business Council (USIBC) Wednesday.
