Beijing, Aug 1 – China successfully launched a fifth orbiter into space Sunday as a part of its indigenous satellite navigation and global positioning network. The satellite was launched at 5.30 a.m. from the Long March 3I carrier rocket, Xinhua reported.
Curitiba (Brazil), Aug 1 – Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva offered to give asylum to an Iranian woman condemned to death by stoning for adultery. Lula said Saturday that Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani – whose case has provoked international condemnation – would be welcome in Brazil if her presence in Iran is a problem for ‘my friend Ahmadinejad’. ‘I ask the leader of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to allow Brazil to shelter that woman,’ he said during a campaign stop for his Workers’ Party in the southern state of Parana.
Edinburgh, Aug 1 – Indian tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain’s beats set to dance by famous choreographer Alonzo King in their joint creation ‘Rasa’ promises to mesmerise crowds at the Edinburgh International Festival this month. The hour-long creation is King’s third collaboration with Grammy Award-winning Hussain, who will perform live on stage at the festival with singer and violinist Kala Ramnath. Considering the popularity of ‘Rasa’, the organisers have scheduled it for four consecutive days at one of the festival’s popular theatre sites, The Hub, from August 26-29.

Using the iPhone 4’s Face Time, firms are developing video-sex chat services and are hiring girls through internet adverts in the US, Daily Mail reported on its website Friday. Face Time lets people call another iPhone 4 user and have live video chats over a Wi-Fi connection through the phone’s camera and screen.
London, Aug 1 – Ancient footprints made by reptiles 318 million years ago prove they were the first animals to conquer dry land, a media report has said. The fossilised reptile footprints were found in sea-cliffs on the Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick, Canada by Howard Falcon-Lang of Royal Holloway, University of London, Daily Mail reported on its website Friday. Experts say the find is proof that reptiles were the first vertebrates to conquer dry land.

Shillong, Aug 1 – A Meghalaya farmer abducted by Bangladeshi nationals last week from a disputed area near the border remains in police custody there, says India’s Border Security Force (BSF). ‘The abducted youth is still under the custody of Bangladesh police. The BDR (Bangladesh Rifles) has informed us that the delay in handing over the youth has been caused by Friday and Saturday being non-working days in Bangladesh,’ BSF spokesman Ravi Gandhi told IANS.

New Delhi, Aug 1 – Goa is following in the footsteps of Kerala to engage with its non-residents who make up at least one-third of the state’s 1.5 million population and contribute substantially to the Goan economy. Eduardo Faleiro, Goa commissioner for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), who is the man behind the efforts, hopes the efforts will best serve the interests of the state.
