Visually-impaired show how to help with white cane

Mumbai, Oct 16 – Sight impaired students here Friday demonstrated how ‘a person with a white cane’ can help them on the road, on the ‘White Cane Safety Day’, an official said.

Forty students of the National Association of Blind (NAB) took part in the demonstration at different locations in the city to spread awareness about safety and security of the sightless, an official said.

‘My heart fills with joy watching these children having a wonderful time. This sight really reinforces our commitment towards our special children and encourages us to do more,’ said Asha Bhatia, deputy director of the NAB.

Organised in association with the Amway Opportunity Foundation (AOF), the students with the help of Vivek Phansalkar, joint commissioner of Mumbai Traffic Police, spread awareness about how a blind person should be helped when spotted on the road.

‘It is important in today’s fast paced life to spread the awareness to assist the visually-challenged. This effort will surely help the visually-challenged children and we hope to get more response from the public to support the cause,’ Phansalkar said.
