New York, Jan 1 – US stocks were mixed as markets closed on the year’s last day of trading Friday, but were up for all of 2010. Since January, the high tech Nasdaq Composite Index posted the largest gains – 16.91 percent – of the three leading Wall Street indices. The Dow Jones Industrial Average of blue chip stocks gained 11.02 percent for the year.
Abuja, Jan 1 – A bomb explosion hit a busy market near army barracks in the Nigerian capital Abuja, Xinhua reported Saturday. At least 11 people were killed in the explosion Friday so far, according to reports. However, police said they could not confirm the toll at this stage.

Alexandria (Egypt), Jan 1 – At least 10 people were killed and six injured Saturday in a blast outside a church in the north Egyptian city of Alexandria, according to witnesses and security sources. Witnesses said that a car that was parked outside the church exploded in the early hours of Saturday and that ambulances were moving the victims to nearby hospitals. IANS
Washington, Jan 1 – A massive system of thunderstorms and tornadoes claimed at least five lives in the south and central US Friday, local media reports said. Three people were killed by a tornado in northwest Arkansas, while another two deaths in bordering southwest Missouri were also reported. Weather forecasters warned that a system of damaging thunderstorms, including a few tornadoes, were threatening the entire lower Mississippi Valley through New Year’s Eve, from central Illinois to northern Louisiana, AccuWeather reported.
