Brisbane, Jan.31 : Former Test great Doug Walters and fast bowler John Hastings have backed stand-in Australian cricket captain Michael Clarke to silence his critics after responding well to what they called a “disappointing” Brisbane crowd on Sunday. Under fire for everything from his bad form to his use of social networking sites, Clarke was jeered by a packed Gabba when he strode to the crease in Sunday’s one-day clash with England. He ended up scoring a match winning 54 and helped Australia seal a series-clinching 51-run win.

Antony meets Chiranjeevi, seeks support for Andhra government

Hyderabad, Jan 31 – In a significant development, senior Congress leader and Defence Minister A.K.Antony Monday met Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) president K.Chiranjeevi and reportedly sought his support to the state Congress government, sources said. Antony drove straight from the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport to Chiranjeevi’s residence in Jubliee Hills and held talks with him. India probing Somali pirates’ terror links

New Delhi, Jan 31 – Indian security agencies are probing the suspected terror links of the captured Somali pirates with Pakistan-based terror groups such as the Lashkar-e-Taiba. The suspicion comes in the wake of increased pirate attacks on merchant vessels passing through the sea lanes close to the Indian coast. Coast Guard Director General Vice Admiral Anil Chopra told reporters here Monday that it was but natural that there would be speculation about terror linkages when the pirates were operating so close to India in the recent months.

Pakistan bans BlackBerry services for foreign diplomats

Islamabad, Jan 31 – Pakistan has banned BlackBerry services for all foreign diplomats working in the country with immediate effect, a media report said Monday. The orders to suspend all blackberry services for staffers of foreign missions stationed across Pakistan were conveyed by the government to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Aaj TV reported. PTA passed on the orders to all cell phone operators and the decision has been implemented forthwith.

Maoists kill four, torch bus, blast CRPF water pump

Ranchi, Jan 31 – Maoist guerrillas killed four people, set a bus on fire and blasted a water tank and pump of paratroopers in four incidents in Jharkhand, police said Monday. The guerrillas of Jharkhand Liberation Tiger (JLT) raided Hulsu village on the outskirts of Ranchi late Sunday. Around 10 to 15 JLT Maoists abducted three youths – Alok Sahu, Mahabali Sahu and Bhola Sahu – and later killed them by slitting their throats, said the police.
