New Delhi/Bhubaneswar, Jan 31 – The environment ministry Monday gave conditional clearance to South Korean steel major Posco’s $12 billion project in Orissa, the biggest foreign direct investment in the country. While the Orissa government welcomed the move, environmentalists termed it ‘unfortunate’ and said they would stage protests. Posco is an integrated steel, mining and port project and separate clearances had to be given to all three.

Mumbai, Jan 31 – The International Cricket Council (ICC) Monday confirmed that the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore will replace Kolkata’s Eden Gardens as the venue for February 27 World Cup match between India and England. New Delhi, Jan 31 – The US Monday defended as ‘standard procedure’ the radio tagging of Indian students, who face the prospect of deportation after the closure of a fake university in San Francisco rendered their immigration dubious, and stressed that it was probing the incident. A day after External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna strongly condemned the use of radio trackers as ‘inhuman’, the US embassy said in a statement: ‘Use of ankle monitors is widespread across the United States and standard procedure for a variety of investigations, and does not necessarily imply guilt or suspicion of criminal activity.’ ‘Some of those involved in the Tri-Valley investigation have been issued ankle monitors,’ the embassy said.

Bangalore, Jan 31 – Leading state-run Canara Bank Monday reported net profit of Rs.1,106 crore for the third quarter of the current fiscal (2010-11), registering a marginal five percent increase year-on-year (YoY) over Rs.1,053 crore posted last year. ‘The marginal growth in net profit for the quarter under review (October-December) is due to extraordinary provisions to the tune of Rs.550 crore as against the net profit of Rs.1,053 crore in like period last fiscal,’ Canara Bank chairman and managing director S. Raman told reporters here.
