Chandigarh to host global meet on venous diseases

Chandigarh, Jan 31 – Nearly 200 doctors from around the world are expected to participate in a two-day international conference on venous diseases (diseases affecting the veins) to be organised here Feb 4, an official said Monday. This conference is being organised by the Venous Association of India (VAI) to update young doctors about advancement in the treatment of venous diseases. ‘Vascular diseases is a vital area of medical science, which has been misunderstood and misrepresented by even the medical fraternity.

Charges against Thomas were discussed by panel: Chidambaram

New Delhi, Jan 31 – Home Minister P. Chidambaram said Monday that allegations against Central Vigilance Commissioner P.J. Thomas were discussed in the Sep 4, 2010, meeting of the selection committee which included him, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj.

Southern Sudan leader pledges peaceful split from north

Addis Ababa, Jan 31 – The leader of what will become the world’s newest state this year, Southern Sudan, Monday promised a peaceful transition to independence after results showed voters had overwhelmingly chosen to split from the north. Salva Kiir, addressing UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir at a meeting on the sidelines of an African Union summit, said the south had no desire to return to ‘the bitterness and divisions of the past’. ‘Today, the ballot box has triumphed over the bullet,’ he said.

Mumbai to host Australian film fest annually

Mumbai, Jan 31 – A five-day Australian Film Festival of India (AFFI) will be held in Mumbai in March and is set to become an annual affair soon. The film festival will be organised by An Australian Film Initiative, an effort by a few Australian film professionals who wish to promote Australian films and distribution networks in emerging and -traditional markets of India, Middle East, and South America, among others, a statement said. The key highlights of the extravaganza would include – a premiere of a latest Australian film, retrospective of internationally acclaimed Australian director Bill Bennett, knowledge series and master classes by Australian film professionals, a financial grant for development of an Indo-Australian screen project, apart from others.

Missing file not to impact combat plane deal: Antony

New Delhi, Jan 31 – The $10-billion tender for 126 combat planes the Indian Air Force wants to buy will progress unhindered as no secret relating to the deal was compromised due to a file which went missing recently, Defence Minister A.K. Antony said here Monday. The file with details on the offsets proposal of the six competing aircraft manufacturers went missing in the last week of December 2010 and was later recovered from the roadside on Khelgaon Marg in south Delhi.

Nepal court comes to Pashupatinath’s aid

Kathmandu, Jan 31 – Nepal’s apex court Monday came to the aid of one of the nation’s oldest and holiest Hindu temples, asking the government not to tamper with the treasury of Pashupatinath till the dispute was resolved. The single bench of Supreme Court judge Girish Chandra Lal slapped an interim stay order on the caretaker government’s decision to open the sealed bursary of the 17th century temple so that its treasures — which have remained hidden from public eyes for centuries — could be listed and sent to banks and museums for safe custody. The judge asked the government, its controversial culture ministry that has stoked a series of religious disputes this year, and the committee formed by the ministry to scrutinise the treasures, to appear in court Feb 10 and explain why they were seeking to open the bursary.

London, Jan 31 – Julian Assange has compared the values of WikiLeaks to those of the founding fathers of the US and asserted that the whistleblowing website does not have a political agenda, a media report said Monday. The WikiLeaks founder, who enraged the US by obtaining a cache of some 250,000 secret diplomatic cables and slowly releasing the documents through his website, also denied that he was motivated by a dislike of America, the Daily Telegraph reported. ‘Our founding values are those of the US revolution,’ Assange said.

Conditional clearance to Posco hardly a relief: environmentalists

New Delhi, Jan 31 – Environmentalists have taken the environment ministry’s conditional clearance to steel major Posco’s $12 billion project in Orissa with a pinch of salt, and say it has been cleared because of pressure from various quarters. ‘The basic issue here is that the environment ministry may put as many conditions as it wants, but the compliance level is very poor,’ environmental lawyer Ritwik Dutta told IANS. Posco is an integrated steel, mining and port project and separate clearances had to be given to all three.
