New method that detects fingerprints containing condom lubricants

Sydney, Jan 31 : Identifying sexual offenders may now get easier with the help of a new method that can detect fingerprints containing condom lubricants left behind. British researchers have developed a technique that could be used to prove suspects had contact with a condom, thus placing them at the scene of the crime, reports the Sydney Morning Herald. It may also be able to identify the unique ridge pattern of offenders’ fingerprints.

US reportedly preparing for an Egypt without Mubarak

Los Angeles, Jan 31 : In the wake of the current unrest in Egypt, the United States is reportedly preparing for an Egypt without President Hosni Mubarak, pushing the 82-year-old leader to meet the demand for greater political freedom. The Obama administration is not yet ready to abandon Mubarak, fearing that openly supporting calls for Mubarak’s removal would alarm other US allies in the region. The Los Angeles Times quoted current and former US government officials as saying that the days of autocratic government in Egypt are over with or without Mubarak.

Phillips Carbon Black to persist with Evonik bid

Kolkata, Jan 31 – RPG Group company Phillips Carbon Black Ltd (PCBL) will persist with its bid to acquire Germany-based Evonik Industry, world’s second largest carbon black maker, its top executive said here Monday. ‘Is it an opportunity (Evonik acquisition) that you should let go off?’ RPG group chairman Sanjiv Goenka said while talking to reporters here Monday. Two Indian carbon black players – Aditya Birla and Phillips Carbon Black – are vying to acquire the assets of Evonik Industries.

Chhattisgarh villagers tell Vedanta to give up project

Taraimar (Chhattisgarh), Jan 31 – Villagers broke down at a public hearing held here Monday while urging the Vedanta Resources officials to ‘kill us now rather than trying to acquire our land forcibly’. The mandatory public hearing was held by authorities to get the consent of the Taraimar villagers to grant environment clearance to mine the 70.12 million tonnes coal reserves in the region. The reserves are spread out over 1070 hectare in Taraimar area under Dharmajaygarh block in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district, some 300 km from the state capital Raipur.
