Israel fears Egypt may fall into Islamic fundamentalists’ hands without fair polls

Jerusalem, Jan 31 : Israel is keeping an eye on the ongoing unrest in Egypt, fearing that the country could fall into the hands of Islamic fundamentalists if fair elections are not held. The News York Daily News quoted Zvi Mazel, a former Israeli ambassador to Egypt, as saying that the threat of Islamic radicals taking over Egypt could be avoided if President Hosni Mubarak allows free polls. “If reform is real and elections truly open, people will have no reason to vote for the radicals,” Mazel added.

Evacuated Indians thank Air India, government

Mumbai, Jan 31 – More than 300 Indians evacuated from Egypt, which is in the midst of a political upheaval, Monday reached Mumbai on a special Air India flight and thanked the government and the airline for coming to their rescue. ‘The Boeing-747 brought back 320 passengers this afternoon,’ an airline spokesperson said. ‘Our scheduled Mumbai-Jeddah flight will be further sent to Cairo this evening to pick up more Indians,’ he added.

Sensex closes 68 points lower, pares intra-day losses (Roundup)

Mumbai, Jan 31 – A benchmark index for Indian equities markets Monday made up for most of its intra-day losses, though it still ended lower amid weak and volatile market sentiments. The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 18,226.21 points, closed at 18,327.76 points, down 68.21 points or 0.37 percent from its previous close at 18,395.97 points. It had slipped more than 357 points to 18,038.48 points in the morning session.

Bulls, pigs, 10 tonnes beef seized in Goa

Panaji, Jan 31 – A consignment of nine bulls and 64 pigs meant for slaughter and nearly 10 tonnes of beef being illegally brought into Goa from Karnataka was seized by police Monday, officials said. The raid was conducted by the police in association with the Akhil Vishwa Jai Sri Ram Gau Sanvardhan Kendra, a Goa-based NGO, which promotes conservation of cows and conducts awareness campaigns against cow slaughter. ‘We have arrested eight people who were with the meat and livestock consignment, which did not have legal permit.

Egyptian president should step down, says Omar Sharif

London, Jan 31 : Egyptian actor Omar Sharif has said that Hosni Mubarak, Egypt’s president should step down as he had failed to improve the standard of living for ordinary people. “The president should have resigned. Given that the entire Egyptian people don’t want him and he’s been in power for 30 years that’s enough,” the Telegraph quoted the 78-year-old as saying in a radio interview.
