Nepal President calls for strengthening ties with India

Tirupati, Jan 31: Nepal President Ram Baran Yadav, who is currently in India on a ten-day state visit, has called for a further strengthening of ties with India. Jhargram villagers protest against West Bengal CPI (M) government

Bird flu in Japan: 40,000 chickens culled

Tokyo, Jan 31 – About 40,000 chickens were killed Monday at a poultry farm in southern Japan after dead chickens found there were confirmed as infected with the bird-flu virus, news reports said. At the farm in Miyazaki prefecture on the island of Kyushu, 90 chickens were found dead Sunday in the winter’s sixth outbreak of bird flu in the prefecture and the ninth in the country. In November, avian flu was found in the western prefecture of Shimane and also has been confirmed in wild birds across the country.

Jail inmates made to stand naked for 12 hours in Georgia

Sydney, Jan 31 – A group of prisoners in Georgia, in the United States, have filed a lawsuit after being made to stand naked for 12 hours, smeared with cream, a media report said. The lawsuit claims that 29 inmates at the Whitfield County jail in Dalton – about 145 km north of Atlanta – were involved in the incident in October last year, The Australian daily Monday quoted the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as saying. David Bennett, 42, filed the suit with fellow inmate Jesus Gallardo, seeking $5 million in punitive damages, citing human rights violations.

INS Vindhyagiri sinks after collision

Mumbai/New Delhi, Jan 31 : The Indian naval ship, INS Vindhyagiri, that caught fire after collision with a foreign merchant vessel at the Mumbai harbour sunk on Monday. INS Vindhyagiri was carrying family members of Navy personnel on board. There have been no injuries as all the people were evacuated from the ship.
