UK climber who survived 1000-ft plunge determined to climb Everest

London, Jan 31 : A UK climber, who survived a 1,000ft fall from a Scottish mountain, has said that he is determined to go ahead with the planned Mount Everest expedition. As he is recovering in a hospital, Adam Potter spoke of his extraordinary brush with death and insisted that the experience has not put him off climbing again, reports the Independent. The 35-year-old, who lives in Glasgow, was standing next to his girlfriend when he slipped and fell over a sheer precipice close to the peak of Sgurr Choinnich Mor, near Ben Nevis, Scotland.

Land acquisition for Posco project soon: Orissa

Bhubaneswar, Jan 31 – The Orissa government Monday welcomed the environment ministry’s conditional nod for South Korean steel major Posco’s $12 billion project in the state and said it would soon begin acquiring land for the same. ‘Although it (the approval) came late, we welcome the decision. The Posco project is important not only for Orissa but also for the whole country as it will provide employment and boost economic activities,’ state Steel and Mines Minister Raghunath Mohanty told IANS.

Producer who optioned Assange’s biography ‘was a womanizer’

New York, Jan 31 : Producer Barry Josephson, who once option Julian Assange’s biography seemed to share with Assange a love for women. Posco project gets conditional nod

New Delhi, Jan 31 : Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh on Monday gave a conditional clearance to South Korean steel giant Posco for the 12 billion dollar steel cum power plant in Orissa. The clearance for the steel-cum-captive power plant has come with 28 new conditions that include riders such as no construction in high erosion zones and no industrial activity in coastal regulation zone. The Environment Ministry has also given a guideline that no construction shall be undertaken in the high erosion zone.

Blueline buses finally to go off Delhi roads

New Delhi, Jan 31 – Delhi’s privately owned Blueline buses, which earned the sobriquet of ‘killer buses’, will pass into history as the entire fleet goes off the road from Tuesday. ‘Today (Monday) will be the last day for Blueline buses. They will not ply on Delhi roads from tomorrow (Tuesday),’ Delhi Transport Minister Arvinder Singh told IANS Monday.

Office of Sri Lankan opposition news website attacked

Colombo, Jan 31 – Attackers broke into the offices of an independent news website in Sri Lanka early Monday, setting fire to equipment and the premises, police said. Lanka E News, which frequently publishes articles critical of the government, said: ‘At about 2:00 a.m. today, a group of unknown personnel had broken into the premises and set it on fire.’ ‘By now everything that was inside the building has been destroyed,’ said the statement, posted on the website lankaenews.com, which carries news in English and Sinhala.

Mel Gibson’s copy of ‘The Beaver’ stolen from his mailbox

Melbourne, Jan 31 : Mel Gibson had to call the police when a DVD copy of his new movie ‘The Beaver’ got stolen from his letterbox outside his Los Angeles home. Production bosses at Summit Entertainment sent Gibson a copy of the film, directed by Jodie Foster, so he could view the final cut before its world premiere at the upcoming South By Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas, reports the Daily Telegraph. Post screening at his home, he placed it back in his mailbox ready for collection by a courier.
