Bankura (West Bengal), Jan 31 – Suspected Maoists shot dead one person while three rebels surrendered in West Bengal’s Bankura district Monday, police said. ‘The body of a villager earlier abducted by suspected Maoists was found in Sutan village under Barikul police station. He had been shot dead,’ Superintendent of Police Pranav Kumar told IANS over phone.
Bhubaneswar, Jan 31 – Welcoming the clearance to the Posco project in the state, Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Monday said his government will study the conditions laid down by the central environment ministry. ‘The union ministry of forest and environment has given conditional clearance to the Posco project. Naypyitaw (Myanmar), Jan 31 – Myanmar’s next president will be an elected member of parliament, ruling out the country’s current military supremo as a candidate, state media announced Monday. The announcement was made on Myanmar television by General Shwe Mann — the third most powerful person in the country’s ruling junta — who was voted speaker of the lower house earlier in the day at the first session of parliament since the Nov 7 polls. ‘The president, vice president and all cabinet members in the coming government will be elected members of parliament,’ Shwe Mann said.
Bhubaneswar, Jan 31 – State-run National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) Monday said its Q3 net profit registered 65 percent rise over the corresponding period in the previous fiscal due to lower operating cost and recovery of metal prices. The company has registered in Q3 a net profit of Rs.256 crore (about $55 million) up 65 percent from Rs.155 crore achieved during the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal, the company said here in a statement. According to the reviewed financial results for Q3 of the financial year 2010-11, taken on record by the board of directors in a meeting held in New Delhi, the sales also jumped by 5 percent to Rs.1,523 crore, from Rs.1454 crore registered during the comparative period of the previous fiscal.

Panaji, Jan 31 – In a sudden order issued late Monday, the Goa government ordered the closure of two offshore casinos here, including MV Casino Royale – the biggest in the state. According to the home ministry order, MV Casino Royale and MV Arabian Sea King have to cease operation because of their inability to obtain a licence from the directorate general of shipping, a central government agency. The order has been signed by Under-secretary (Home) V.
Bhopal, Jan 31 – Three farmers in three districts of Madhya Pradesh Monday attempted to commit suicide, in a grim reminder of the continuing crisis the state’s farmers find themselves in after their crops were destroyed by frost. Ramji Marawi (28), a farmer of Saliwada village in Jabalpur, allegedly took poison along with his two sons Manish (8) and Manoj (4). They have been admitted to the Jabalpur Medical College Hospital, police said.
