ULFA ban: Court issues notices to Nagaland, Meghalaya

New Delhi, Jan 31 – A tribunal headed by a Delhi High Court judge Monday issued notices to Nagaland and Meghalaya on the central government’s plea seeking its nod to extend a ban by two more years on militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA). ‘Issue fresh notices to the states of Nagaland and Meghalaya through their chief secretaries and they be directed to file their affidavits,’ said Justice Mukta Gupta. The court fixed the matter for further hearing on Feb 14.

Suspected ‘Maoists’ arrested from Trinamool-controlled guest house

Kolkata, Jan 31 – Two suspected Maoists said to be involved in the attack on a paramilitary force camp last year were arrested from a guest house of the Trinamool Congress-run Midnapore municipality in West Bengal Monday. Several journalists were injured, one of them seriously, when police rained canes on a mob which allegedly tried to prevent the police from carrying out the arrests, said West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee here. The arrested duo, Asim Mahato and Amiya Mahato, were involved in the rebel attack on the Eastern Frontier Rifles (EFR) camp at Silda, 30 km from Midnapore town, killing 24 EFR personnel Feb 15, 2010, police said.

Trader’s office burgled of Rs.41 lakh

Ghaziabad, Jan 31 – A trader’s office was burgled of Rs.41 lakh in Ghaziabad’s Loha Mandi area, police said Monday. According to police, the burglary took place during the weekend at Bahubali Steel and Iron Company run by Vibhor Goel. Goel found his safe open and the money missing when he opened the shop in Ghaziabad’s steel wholesale market Monday around 12 noon.

Court upholds trial for La Marts principal, teachers

Kolkata, Jan 31 – A city court Monday turned down the appeal of the principal and three other teachers of La Martiniere for Boys School for quashing an earlier order for their trial for allegedly abetting the suicide of class VII student Rouvanjit Rawla. Kolkata Sessions Court Chief Judge Dipak Saha Roy rejected the appeal filed by principal Sunirmal Chakravarti and the other teachers for setting aside the order of the 12th metropolitan judge of Bankshall Court Apurva Kumar Ghosh that the four be tried under more serious charges like abetment of suicide Of 13-year-old boy. Rouvanjit hanged himself days after he was allegedly caned by the principal and said to have been mentally harassed by the three teachers – Garnian, Partho Dutta and David Raun.

Parliament panel to examine defence land management

New Delhi, Jan 31 – A parliamentary committee, headed by Congress MP Satpal Maharaj, will examine the functioning of the military cantonments and management of defence land in the backdrop of a series of real estate scams that hit the armed forces in the last couple of years. ‘The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence has decided to examine various aspects related to the subject ‘Functioning of Military Cantonments and Stations’ and ‘Management of Defence Land’,’ a parliament press communique said here Monday. The committee also invited suggestions and opinions of the people, experts, professional, organisations, associations and stake-holders on the subject within two weeks.

Captured pirates to be tried under Indian laws

Mumbai, Jan 31 – For the first time, an Ethiopian and 14 Somalian pirates would face Indian laws for attempting to hijack a foreign ship and fighting with the Indian Navy near Minicoy Isles, off the south-west coast of the country, a police official said Monday. The pirates, who had jumped off their mother ship after it was destroyed by the navy, were rescued from the sea and brought to Mumbai Monday morning. ‘They have been arrested under various Indian laws which they have violated.

Growth rate meaningless if agricultural crisis persists: Bardhan

New Delhi, Jan 31 – The Communist Party of India Monday said a high growth rate was meaningless unless the government deals with the crisis plaguing agriculture and also accused the government of delaying finalising the food security bill. PF scam: Court threatens warrants against accused judges

Ghaziabad, Jan 31 – The special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court trying the provident fund (PF) scam Monday asked the defence lawyers for the six accused judges to furnish an undertaking to ensure their clients’ presence before the court otherwise warrants would be issued against them. The court’s warning came when it found that the six judges had not turned up before the court even after they failed to get relief from the Allahabad High Court. If the undertaking does not reach the court within a week’s time, it would issue non-bailable warrants (NBW) against the six erring judges on the next hearing, scheduled for Feb 18.
