New Delhi, March 1 – Ahead of a crucial round of negotiations on reform of the UN Security Council next month, Cheick Sidi Diarra, the top UN envoy for Africa, says India and the 53-nation continent should ‘stick together’ through twists and turns to realise their long-standing quest for permanent seats on the global high table. ‘It’s important that India and Africa stick together.

Hyderabad, other parts of Telangana hit by rail blockade

Hyderabad, March 1 – The rail traffic in Hyderabad and nine other districts of Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh Tuesday came to a grinding halt as protesters demanding separate statehood to the region squatted on railway tracks. The protesters of various pro-Telangana groups stopped dozens of trains in and around Hyderabad, Nalgonda, Warangal, Nizamabad, Khammam and other districts even as railway authorities have cancelled 25 express trains causing severe inconvenience to passengers.

Discovery astronauts complete ‘textbook’ spacewalk

Washington, March 1 – Two space shuttle Discovery astronauts moved a failed ammonia cooling pump during a more than six-hour spacewalk outside the International Space Station. NASA officials called Monday’s work a ‘textbook’ spacewalk, after overcoming a problem with the station’s robotic arm that left astronaut Steve Bowen holding the weightless pump for a bit longer than expected.

Man who came back from ‘dead’ to sue wife

Chandigarh, March 1 – A septuagenarian former Indian Air Force (IAF) official declared dead by a local Punjab court in 1996 on the basis of evidence submitted by his family members, has now decided to file a case against his wife and sons. Sital Singh Bagi, who retired as warrant officer from the IAF in September 1986, was declared dead in 1996 by a local court in Rajpura town in Patiala district of Punjab, around 45 km from here.

Danish ship taken hostage by Somali pirates

Copenhagen, March 1 – A Danish ship with seven crew members on board has been captured by pirates off the coast of Somalia, Denmark’s foreign ministry said Monday evening. The captured ship is said to be carrying a family of five, including three children aged 12 to 16, their parents, and two other adult helpers, Xinhua reported Tuesday.
