New Delhi, Feb 28 – Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s budget Monday earned bouqets from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who congratulated him for ‘doing a good job to curb inflation and ensure sustained and inclusive economic growth’, but the opposition slammed the budget as ‘timid and disappointing’ that evaded the issues of the ‘aam aadmi’ (common man). Hailing the union budget as an effort to curb inflation and inclusive growth, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Mukherjee has ‘done a good job’.
Bangalore, Feb 28 – The resilient IT industry Monday slammed the budget for 2011-12 for imposing minimum alternate tax (MAT) on Special Economic Zone (SEZ) units and withdrawing the tax holiday on export units, terming them retrograde measures. ‘Though the services sector has been lauded for its double digit growth, the imposition of 18.5 percent MAT on SEZs and withdrawal of tax holiday under section 10A/10B of the Income Tax Act will impact the industry growth,’ Nasscom (National Association of Software and Services Companies) said in a statement.
London, Feb 28 – Internet search engine giant Google has been searching for a solution to a glitch in its email service, which has affected the Gmail accounts of tens of thousands of users across the world. Around 600,000 users were thought to have been affected, with Google spending several frantic hours trying to restore the service used by an estimated 200 million people, the Daily Mail reported.
New Delhi, Feb 28 – Individual and sole proprietor service tax payers with an annual turnover of up to Rs.60 lakh will not be required to go through audit formalities, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said Monday. ‘I propose to free all individual and sole proprietor taxpayers with a turnover up to Rs.60 lakh from the formalities of audit,’ Mukherjee said while presenting the 2011-12 general budget in the Lok Sabha.
Chandigarh, Feb 28 – The general budget for 2011-12 presented by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has increased allocation to this union territory by nearly 47 percent, a move heartily welcomed by city administrators. ‘Government of India has increased the plan budget allocation by nearly 47 per cent and has fixed the ceiling of plan budget to Rs.661.89 crore as compared to current year’s budget allocation of Rs.450.91 crore,’ the spokesperson of Chandigarh administration said here Monday.
