US envoy, EU delegation to China condemn attacks on journalists

Beijing, Feb 28 – The US ambassador and European Union delegation to China Monday condemned China’s failure to ensure the safety of foreign journalists, a day after a reporter was beaten and scores more harassed and detained. Bloomberg Television reporter Stephen Engle was punched and kicked by at least five men in civilian clothes Monday as he was reporting on a ‘Jasmine revolution’ gathering in Wangfujing, central Beijing.

Vidarbha farmers unimpressed by budget

Nagpur, Feb 28 – Even as the union budget placed agriculture central to the country’s growth, it failed to impress the cotton famers and farm widows of the Vidarbha region, an activist said here Monday. ‘There is no relief package for those farmers or farm widows who have lost their husbands to debt and bad crops,’ said Kishor Tiwari, president of Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS).

Kolkata, Feb 28 – The gems and jewellery sector is disappointed at the imposition of a one percent excise duty on branded jewellery in the general budget and the continuation of income tax rather than turnover tax for diamond merchants, an industry leader said Monday. ‘In 2007, a one percent excise duty on diamond jewellery was imposed.

Four juveniles held for murder

New Delhi, Feb 28 – Four juveniles were arrested for allegedly thrashing a 14-year-old government school boy to death here, police said Monday. ‘Prashant Singh, a Class 8 student at the Government Boys’ Senior Secondary School in Uttam Nagar, was returning to his Vishwas Nagar residence Saturday when he passed a comment on a girl, nicknaming her ‘Shaktimaan’,’ Deputy Commissioner of Police Sharad Aggarwal said.

Iran opposition vows protests until leaders are freed

Berlin, Feb 28 – The Iranian opposition said Monday that its protests would continue until the release of two of its main leaders, according to messages on its websites. The protests were aimed at securing the release from custody of Mir Hossein Moussavi and Mehdi Karroubi, who have been kept incommunicado under house arrest for almost two weeks.

Telecom industry disappointed at ‘discouraging’ budget

New Delhi, Feb 28 – Contrary to the industry’s expectations, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Monday waved no magic wand for the telecommunications sector, leaving it disappointed. ‘We in the cellular industry are deeply disappointed that the industry that has provided so much to national development and has made India the second largest and fastest growing telecom market in the world, has not received the encouragement and nurture befitting such an important engine of economic development and nation building,’ said Rajan Mathews, director general, Cellular Operators Association of India.

Budgetary boost to space research, atomic energy

New Delhi, Feb 28 – India’s atomic energy and space programmes received handsome increases in their annual allocation of around 31 percent and 43 percent, respectively, over the previous year in the budget for 2011-12 presented by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Monday. The department of space (DOS) got a sum of Rs.5,700 crore for 2011-12 as against the revised estimates of Rs.4,000 crore.

Relaxation in paying pending house tax in Punjab

Chandigarh, Feb 28 – The Punjab government Monday announced relaxation to the state residents in paying pending house tax, and water supply and sewerage charges.
