New Delhi, Feb 28 – It was a pleasant sunny day in the capital Monday, with the maximum and minimum temperatures staying below average. However, thunderstorms could occur Tuesday, the weather office said.

Families refuse bodies of women lovers in Bengal

Kolkata, Feb 28 – As in life, so in death. Nine days after two women committed suicide in West Bengal following the society’s refusal to accept their love for each other, their bodies are still lying unclaimed in a hospital morgue with their families reluctant to cremate them, police said Monday.

‘More funds needed for women, child development’

New Delhi, Feb 28 – Even as the allocation for the social sector has been increased 17 percent by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in the budget proposals for 2011-12, little increase has been seen in the funds for women and child development, says a prominent social activist. ‘The budget certainly does not reflect gender budgeting as there has not been any significant mention of allocation of resources for better implementation of laws and policies for women.

Relief for cinema industry as film rolls gets duty rebate

New Delhi, Feb 28 – Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Monday sought to give relief to the Indian film industry by proposing to exempt some basic raw material that has to be imported from payment of excise duties. ‘The Indian film industry has represented that colour, unexposed jumbo rolls of cinematographic film are not manufactured domestically and have to be imported,’ the finance minister said.

Karnataka mulls mandatory use of CFL bulbs

Bangalore, Feb 28 – Use of compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) bulbs in all households in Karnataka may be made mandatory as part of measures to reduce power consumption, state energy minister Shobha Karandlaje said Monday. ‘We have decided that use of CFL bulbs in households in the state should be made compulsory,’ she said at a function here to launch a campaign to save power.
