Industry chambers welcome ‘development-oriented’ budget

New Delhi, Feb 28 – Industry organisations Monday hailed Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee for presenting a ‘development-oriented’ general budget. ‘Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has done a fine balancing act to sustain economic growth, curb inflation, promote inclusive growth and maintain fiscal consolidation,’ said Chandrajit Banerjee, director general, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

Rahman loses out at Oscars, Indians disappointed

Rahman bagged two Oscar nominations in the original score and original song categories for his work in Danny Boyle’s ’127 Hours’, but failed to repeat the success story of 2009 and lost out on both the awards at the 83rd Academy Awards here Sunday night.

Boy commits suicide after mother’s scolding

New Delhi, Feb 28 – Upset over being scolded for not concentrating on studies, a class 8 student committed suicide by hanging himself at his home in east Delhi Monday, police said. ‘Gulshan Thakur, 13, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at his home at New Ashok Nagar area Monday afternoon,’ said a police officer.

Police way of amusing themselves at Kotla (World Cup Diary)

EU to impose sanctions on Libya

Brussels, Feb 28 – European Union member states are to impose sanctions on Libya later Monday, following the UN Security Council’s call for punitive measures, a spokeswoman said. On Saturday, the Security Council called unanimously for sanctions to be adopted against the regime of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in response to his bloody crackdown on anti-government demonstrators.

CBI court tells Talwars to attend hearing, issues warrants

Ghaziabad/Allahabad, Feb 28 – A CBI special court here Monday issued bailable warrants against Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, the parents of murdered teenager Aarushi Talwar, after they failed to appear before it, while the Allahabad High Court continued to hear their plea against their being tried for the crime. The Ghaziabad-based Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court, earlier this month, ordered that Aarushi’s doctor parents should be tried for the gruesome killing of their own daughter in Noida about three years ago.
