Miami scientists track great hammerhead shark migration routes

Washington, Feb 28 : University of Miami scientists have discovered the largely unknown migratory patterns and habitat use of the endangered hammerhead shark using satellite tag technology. Neil Hammershlag and colleagues tracked one of the nomadic sharks for 62 days to uncover its northeast journey from the coast of South Florida to the middle of the Atlantic off the coast of New Jersey.

Briton gets life sentence in Iraq for killing two

Baghdad, Feb 28 – An Iraqi court Monday sentenced a British contractor to life imprisonment for killing two of his colleagues in Baghdad, Xinhua reported. ‘The court issued a verdict of life imprisonment for Danny Fitzsimons who was convicted for killing two of his colleagues,’ said Tariq Harb, the lawyer of the defendant.

Tourism gets 10 percent hike in budget

Allocations for space, atomic power departments hiked

New Delhi, Feb 28 – Two strategic deparments – space and atomic energy – Monday got handsome increases in their annual plan allocation of around 43 percent and 31 percent respectively over the previous year in the budget for 2011-12 presented by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee. The department of space (DOS) got a sum of Rs.5,700 crore for 2011-12 as against the revised estimates of Rs.4,000 crore.

New Delhi, Feb 28 – Terming as ‘unfortunate’ the hike in service tax for air conditioned private hospitals, two such premier institutions said they were not impressed by the budget for 2011-12 presented Monday by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee. ‘It is unfortunate that the finance minister has chosen to levy a service tax on air-conditioned hospitals having a bed capacity in excess of 25 beds.

AIIMS gets Rs.1,000 crore in budget

New Delhi, Feb 28 – The prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Monday got a budgetary hike, with Rs.1,022 crore earmarked in the union budget for the institute that caters to almost 8,000 patients every day. India’s health allocation has been hiked by 20 percent with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee announcing Rs.26,760 crore (Rs.26.7 billion/$5.9 billion) for the sector with special focus on research, insurance cover for marginal workers and medical education.
