16 NATO members taking part in Libya military action

Brussels, March 31 – NATO announced on its website Thursday that 16 out of its 28 members were taking part in the mission enforcing a UN resolution on Libya, which foresees a no-fly zone, a naval arms embargo and air strikes to protect civilians from attack. Albania, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia and Slovenia were exposed as the countries not contributing to the military effort.

Provident fund scam accused judges get bail

Ghaziabad, March 31 – A CBI court here granted bail to six judges accused in the provident fund (PF) scam case and adjourned the hearing to April 13. The CBI lawyer opposed the bail but the protest was set aside.

Maoist involved in killing of cops held

Ranchi, March 31 – A Maoist commander allegedly involved in killing of three policemen was arrested in Jharkhand’s Giridih district Thursday, police said. According to police, Jawar Murmu alias Taloda was involved in killing of three policemen in a gun battle in Dumka last year.

South Eastern Railway earnings up 14.41 percent

Kolkata, March 31 – The South Eastern Railway (SER) posted a 14.41 percent increase in its earnings April 2010-February 2011, which stood at at Rs.9,405.3 crore against Rs.8,222.51 crore in the corresponding period of the last fiscal, a release said. According to the release, the SER earned Rs.1,027 crore more than the last financial year from goods traffic and Rs.74.6 crore more from passenger traffic.

Burglars break through shop wall, loot cash

New Delhi, March 31 – Burglars broke into a cloth shop in west Delhi and decamped with over Rs.35 lakh in cash kept in a safe there, police said Thursday. ‘The burglary came to light Thursday morning at Tayal Cloth House located in KJ1 Block in Rajapuri area in Dabri when the shop owner Khusiram Tayal found one wall broken of the shop broken and cash missing from a safe,’ said a senior police officer.

Child killed in roof collapse

New Delhi, March 31 – A two-year-old girl was killed and two people were injured here Thursday when a roof of a building under construction collapsed, the fire brigade said Thursday. The girl, Diksha, was pulled out of the debris and rushed to a hospital where she was declared dead.

In national interest, official can be sacked without probe: Court

New Delhi, March 31 – The Supreme Court has held that the government need not communicate the charges against an official sacked for delinquency or hold an enquiry if doing so would jeopardise the interests and the security of the country. ‘In terms of the mandate of the constitution, the communication of the charge and holding of an enquiry could be dispensed with in view of the interest involving security of the state,’ said an apex court bench of Justice Mukundakam Sharma and Justice A.R.

Plight of ancient Indian heritage in focus

New Delhi, March 31 – The fate of the ancient monuments of India – seen through the eyes of two 18th century British landscape artists and the state of the relics 200 years later – is the focus of a documentary exposition on Indian heritage that opened here Thursday. The exposition captures important historical monuments through 73 aquatints by noted British 18th century landscape artists Thomas and William Daniell and matching photographs by eminent Italian photographer, Antonio Martinelli, who chronicles their 20th century condition – retracing the journey of the British artists in India.
