10 injured in student-police clash in Bhopal

Bhopal, March 31 – At least ten people were injured when National Students Union of India (NSUI) activists, demanding a CBI probe into the death of a Khandwa college professor, clashed with police here Thursday. The Congress-backed students union was also demanding a ban on the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a students union affiliated to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, whose activists allegedly caused the death of the professor early this month.

Mumbai, March 31 – The Bombay High Court Thursday wanted to know why a first information report was not lodged against Mumbai Congress chief Kripashankar Singh, who is accused of amassing huge wealth through illegal means. The judges’ query came after the submissions made by the Income Tax Department, Enforcement Directorate and the Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau on the investigations into the Singh family’s wealth.

Cricket World Cup gets Rs.45 crore tax relief

New Delhi, March 31 – The International Cricket Council (ICC) has landed a Rs.45 crore ($10 million) bonanza with the Indian cabinet Thursday exempting the income earned during the World Cup from tax. At a meeting presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the cabinet approved the finance ministry’s proposal to exempt the 2011 World Cup from income tax.

18 die in Pakistan blasts, Fazlur Rehman attacked after WikiLeaks expose

Islamabad, March 31 – At least 12 people were killed in a bombing in northwest Pakistan that targetted Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, while six people died Thursday evening when their car hit a remote-controlled bomb planted by the roadside in the country’s southwest, police said. Rehman was exposed last week by whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks for his offer to the US to mediate with the Taliban.
