London, May 17: A controversy has broken out over claims that British Prime Minister David Cameron has fitted a second kitchen in their Downing Street home, but refused to reveal its cost despite claiming to be transparent.
It is alleged that Samantha Cameron oversaw the work of installing the ‘large and modern’ new kitchen in No 11, the Daily Mail reports.
Cameron’s family had chosen to move into a four-bedroom flat above the Chancellor’s residence, when the Prime Minister was elected one year ago, instead of No 10 citing that it was larger.
Cameron had a small kitchen in the flat renovated at their own expense before they moved in, but it was not known that a second kitchen had been fitted.
Meanwhile, Cameron’s spokesman denial to reveal the cost of the second kitchen has sparked controversy.
“The Camerons are only temporary residents in one of the nation’s most important buildings. Taxpayers, architects and historians have the right to know if they are removing internal walls and installing some kind of brushed steel, Notting Hill-style designer kitchen,” Tom Watson, the former Labour Cabinet minister, said.
