Tehran, May 23: Iran is reportedly going ahead with plans to operate the nuclear reactor in Bushehr despite scientists warning that a future earthquake could devastate the plant.
“The seismic danger to Iran and its implications for the reactor in Bushehr could be disastrous for Iran, similar to the disaster in Fukushima, Japan,” The Telegraph quoted a report commissioned shortly after the Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was crippled by the tsunami on March 11, as saying.
Iran is adamant about not giving up their plans, nuclear experts advising the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, said.
“Iranian officials have raised a number of serious issues highlighting the dangers earthquakes pose to the Bushehr plant. But the government has just ignored them,” said a senior Western official.
A Russian company building the plant recently said the reactor had been brought up to “the minimum controllable level of power” as part of the final tests before finally operating it. (ANI)
