Eight mechanics shot dead in garage in Mexico

Villahermosa (Mexico), May 19 (IANS/EFE) Eight mechanics working at a garage were gunned down and two were wounded in an attack in the southeastern Mexican state of Tabasco, authorities said Wednesday.

The incident took place in Cardenas, a city located about 60 km from Villahermosa, the capital of Tabasco.

A group of about 10 gunmen opened fire Tuesday night on the mechanics as they were finishing work at a garage, the Tabasco Attorney General’s Office said.

The two wounded men were taken to hospitals in Villahermosa and are listed in stable condition, the AG’s office said.

The gunmen, who managed to get away, have not been identified, officials said.

Around 20 people have been murdered this year, according to official figures, in Cardenas.

A total of 15,270 people died in drug-related violence in Mexico last year, and nearly 40,000 people have died since President Felipe Calderon declared war on the country’s cartels shortly after taking office in December 2006.
