Maharashtra villagers demand action against those responsible for firing on f armers

Maval (Maharashtra), Aug 10: Irate residents of Maval village near Maharashtra’s Pune city today voiced their demand for stern action against those responsible for the police firing on farmers on Tuesday.

The angry farmers demanded that those responsible for the firing be brought to book or the death of their fellowmen.

“Police has become a predator of the people. All the journalists gathered here have to make sure that this government collapses. And we want all the culprits who unleashed violence in our village handcuffed. This is our demand from you people,” said Maruti Deshmukh, a village from the local Sadauli village.

At least three persons were killed after police opened fire on a crowd of farmers after it went out of control on Tuesday.hough certain media reports said four farmers had been killed in the incident, this could not be independently verified.

Hundreds of farmers had gathered to block the Mumbai-Pune Expressway in a bid to vent their ire against the skewed acquisition of their lands for a water project in the industrial township of Pimpri-Chinchwad.

At this, scores of policemen swooped down on the spot and urged them to move out from the busy highway.

However, despite repeated appeals made by the personnel, the farmers intensified their stir and began pelting stones at the officials, according to certain media reports.

In the ensuring carnage, the protesting farmers went on a rampage, torching police vehicles and damaging their cars.

The police have detained nearly 300 protestors for their alleged role in the violence.

According to the protesting farmers, the project, which is based on their lands, would have an adverse impact of the supply of potable water in the villages. (ANI)
