Rahul Gandhi visits homes of farmers killed in Pune firing incident

Maval (Maharashtra), Aug 18: Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi on Thursday visited the homes of farmers, who were killed in police firing during an agitation on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on August 9.

The farmers had been killed after the police opened fire, while thousands of farmers had blocked the Mumbai-Pune Expressway to protest against an underground water pipeline project that will divert water from the Pawna dam to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Township.

Gandhi, who recently returned to India from the United States, spent some time meeting with Kantabai, whose husband was among those killed,” NDTV reports.

The death of three farmers in police firing in Pune had sparked off a controversy with the Opposition demanding the dismissal of the Maharashtra Government.

The Maharashtra Government had earlier suspended policemen, who were caught on camera firing at the protesting farmers. (ANI)
