China says dialogue, negotiation ‘only ways’ to resolve Iran nuke issue

United Nations, Sept 8: Iran’s nuclear issue can be only resolved through dialogue and negotiation, China has said.

“China is of the view that the only ways to achieve comprehensive, lasting and proper settlement of the Iranian nuclear issue are to carry out dialogue and negotiation on the basis of gradual and orderly development, as well as equal and mutual benefit because this is in the common interest of the international community,” China’s envoy to the United Nations, Li Baodong, said.

China has always valued the work of the 1737 committee and would continue supporting it, Baodong further said.

The 1737 Committee is responsible for overseeing a set of sanctions which resolution 1737 and subsequent council resolutions imposed on Iran.

Resolution 1737, which was adopted in 2006, imposed sanctions on Iran for failing to stop its uraniam enrichment program

Baodong said China expects experts’ panel to aid the resolution’s implementation by working under the committee’s aegis, Xinhua reports.

“We hope all parties will move towards each other, take on the difficulties and step up diplomatic efforts, use innovative thinking and take new measures for mutual trust so to create conditions for the proper settlement of the Iranian nuclear issue, ” Baoding said.

China has taken cognizance of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) latest report on Iran’s nuclear issue, and that Iran, as a party to the Treaty on the Non- Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), enjoys the right of peaceful use of nuclear energy, Baodong added.

He stressed on the need for dialogue and negotiation to find a proper solution to the Iran’s nuclear issue, which it will ultimately maintain peace and stability in the Middle East. (ANI)
