Dhaka, Sep 6: Bangladesh may not go ahead with a ‘letter of exchange’ over giving transit to India since Delhi had delayed the Teesta river water sharing deal, a media report said Tuesday.
Daily Star reported that Bangladesh might not sign the letter of exchange’ regarding transit for India as Delhi has postponed the Teesta deal at the last moment.
The letter of exchange had been earlier finalised after a string of talks with Indian officials. It was due to be signed Tuesday, it cited a source at the Bangladesh foreign ministry as saying.
India Tuesday said that it is unlikely the Teesta river water sharing agreement will take place during the current visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Dhaka.
The Teesta water agreement hit choppy waters after Mamata Banerjee, chief minister of India’s West Bengal state, protested the final draft of the agreement. She even refused to accompany Manmohan Singh to Dhaka over it.
