Palestine applies for UN membership

United Nations, Sep 23: Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas Friday formally applied to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for the recognition of Palestine as a member state of the world organisation, Xinhua reported.

A letter was handed over to the UN secretary general in this regard on the sidelines of the 66th General Assembly session. It urged the UN chief to forward the application to the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly.

Membership of the UN is open to nations that accept the UN Charter. The General Assembly admits new member states on the recommendation of the Security Council.
