Washington, Nov 5: A US student was suspended for hugging his female friend because his school has a zero-tolerance policy on any kind of public display of affection.
Nick Martinez of Palm Bay’s Southwest Middle School in Florida said that he gave a quick hug to his best friend, a girl, between classes, but his principal spotted their public display of affection and took them to the school’s dean.
Although, the principal thought the hug was innocent, the dean penalized the two students with in-school suspensions.
The school’s student handbook states that students will receive a one-day out-of-school suspension for kissing, and students caught hugging or hand-holding are penalized with a dean’s detention or suspension.
The school administrators said that a committee of parents approved the “no hugging” policy years ago, and there are no plans to change it any time soon, Fox News reported.
Their strict policy stipulates no difference between an unwanted hug, or sexual harassment, and a hug between friends. (ANI)
