India beat Kiwis in U-21 women’s hockey

New Delhi, Nov 8: Captain Poonam Rani struck a winner two minutes before the hooter as India edged past New Zealand 3-2 in their opening match of the four nation Under-21 women’s hockey tournament here Tuesday.

There was a flurry of goals after India opened the scoring through Anupa Barla in the 11th minute. Sian Fremaux scored the equaliser the next minute, but India got back the lead with Anju Dhiman converting a penalty corner in the 13th minute.

India, who used their superior skills and speed to get the better of the burly New Zealanders, led 2-1 in the first half.

New Zealand drew level with Tara Hall converting a penalty corner in 43rd minute.

Both teams got many chances in the second half but failed to score.

India got a penalty corner in the 68th minute and forward Rani made no mistake in slamming the winner.

In another match, Germany defeated Australia 3-1.

Rebecca Grote (3rd minute), Marilena Kraub (46th) and Lisa-Marie Keim (70th) were the scorers for Germany.

Australia pulled one back through Hayley Padget (41st).
